BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia's semifinal match against Ole Miss in the SEC Women's Golf Championships was suspended due to darkness on Saturday night. Play will resume on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. ET.
The Bulldogs, who trail 2-1 in completed matches, rallied late in the day and seized momentum. In the matchups still on the course, freshman Jo Hua Hung leads 2-up through 16, while senior Rinko Mitsunaga is all-square through 17 after winning four of her final six holes of the day.
"Take a nap is basically all we're going to do," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We'll get some dinner, take a nap and celebrate Easter Sunday with a little sunrise service at the golf course."
Ole Miss was in control for much of the afternoon. The Rebels led four of five matches through 16 holes before freshman Jenny Bae and Mitsunaga reversed the momentum.
"Probably 12 holes through today's match I would have given anything to have a chance to win, and we do," Brewer said. "Now we have to close it out. We told our team that Ole Miss had been really strong on the front but struggled on the back. We just kept hanging around and hanging around and now we have a tee time on Easter Sunday."
Bae was 2-down to Ellen Hutchinson-Kay through 13 but then captured No. 14 and No. 17 to bring the match to all-square. Both golfers birdied No. 18 to force extra holes. After a pair of pars on the first two holes, Bae parred the third playoff hole – and 21st overall – to clinch her victory.
"She birdied 16, 17 and 18 just to force extra holes and then wins on 21," Brewer said. "I think she probably would have birdied there if she really had to, but all she had to do was two-putt. She kept telling me she was going to win. She said I'm not going to lose. I think that speaks a little bit about this team. We've got a lot of fight."
Mitsunaga was 4-down to Macy Somoskey through 11 holes before a birdie at No. 12. She went on to earn wins at No. 14 and No. 15 to close the gap to 1-down. After halving No. 16, both golfers hit their tee shots on No. 17. Mitsunaga landed safely on the green, but Somoskey came up short and in a bunker.
Shortly thereafter, the horn suspending play sounded at approximately 7:40 CT. Since they had started the hole, the golfers were given the option to finish out No. 17. Mitsunaga parred; however, Somoskey missed her putt to halve the hole and make the match all-square. They will play No. 18 and any extra holes needed on Sunday.
Hung also will return to the course. She is 2-up through 16 and can win by halving one of the two remaining holes.
Georgia knocked No. 4 Vanderbilt, 3-2, in the morning's quarterfinal round to advance against Ole Miss. The Rebels upset top-seeded Florida, 3-2, on Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs seized momentum toward the end of their first nine of their matchup with the Commodores. Georgia built multiple-hole leads in four matches, with Gabriela Coello, Bae and Harmie Constantino turning at 2-up and Hung doing so at 3-up.
Bae gave the Bulldogs their first point with a birdie on her 17th hole of the day to take a 3-and-1 win. The Commodores evened the match when Morgan Baxendale birdied her 18th hole to edge Coello, 1-up.
Vanderbilt briefly went up 2-1 after Abbey Carlson secured a 2-and-1 victory over Mitsunaga; however, Georgia won two matches almost simultaneously to secure the victory.
Hung won four straight holes in her first nine to lead 3-up after nine and maintained a multiple-hole edge the rest of the way until closing out with a 2-and-1 decision.
Constantino was all-square with Auston Kim through 17 holes but sank a 3-foot par putt on the final hole of her loop to take a 1-up victory.
South Carolina bested Auburn, 4-1, in the other semifinal on Saturday. The SEC Championship match will begin shortly after the conclusion of the Georgia-Ole Miss semifinal and will air on the SEC Network in its entirety.
