COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs completed its final practice Thursday afternoon prior to starting competition Friday in the 2019 Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Championships.
Georgia, the tournament's No. 1-seed, won the program's 10th SEC regular season title outright last weekend by concluding the regular season undefeated for just the second time in history. In doing so, Georgia (21-0, 13-0) has won 21-straight matches, which is one shy of a single season program-best mark set in 2002.
For the 14th-consecutive year, Georgia has finished in the top four in the SEC final standing, meaning the Bulldogs don't take to the courts until the quarterfinals. In this season's edition, Georgia will play the winner of No. 9-seed LSU and No. 8-seed Alabama who duke it out in the second round Thursday. The Bulldogs' quarterfinals match between either the Tigers or the Crimson Tide is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT on Friday.
"It was a rainy morning and a windy afternoon, so we must be in Texas," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "It was a great practice and we are excited to be here. Texas A&M has done a great job of getting everything ready for the tournament. We are thrilled about getting our first match in tomorrow. We are going to grab lunch here in a bit, rest, and see who we are going to play."
The SEC switched its tournament format to what it is today in 1990 and since the Bulldogs have garnered the No. 1-seed now eight times, representing each year Georgia won the regular season. The other two regular season titles occurred in 1983 and 1989. Georgia has won the SEC Tournament six times in the current format and seven total. The last time the Bulldogs won the SEC Tournament Championship was in 2014.
The 2019 Bulldogs' conquest to pair their regular season championship with the conference tournament title is a feat only accomplished four times (1983, 1994, 2007, and 2009). Among those four previous squads, only the 1994 team added a national title, which the current Bulldogs have with February's ITA Team Indoor Championship, however the '94 team did so twice by winning the NCAA Championship and the National Indoors.
Georgia has reached the finals in five of the past seven seasons. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT and will be aired on SEC Network.
