BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Led by a 3-under 69 from freshman Jo Hua Hung, Georgia fired a 2-under 286 in Thursday's second round of the SEC Women's Golf Championships. The Bulldogs enter the final round of stroke play at Greystone Golf and Country Club in fourth place at 3-over 579.
Georgia is 12 shots off the pace of No. 12 Florida atop the team leaderboard; however, the Bulldogs are 13 strokes ahead of the cut to advance to the match play portion of the championships on Saturday and Sunday.
"We've played two really good days of golf, with 10 solid rounds and a couple of special rounds in there," head coach Josh Brewer said. "They continue to follow a game plan we came up with before coming over here. It's nice seeing them rewarded and being patient."
For the second straight day, Georgia received strong scores from all five golfers. A day after dropping a 76, the Bulldogs discarded a 75 on Thursday.
"Overall, I sort of wish it was play-five, count-five (scores) right now because, top to bottom, we're playing as well as anyone this week," Brewer said.
In addition to Hung's effort, Georgia also counted a 71 from senior Rinko Mitsunaga and a pair of 73s from freshmen Jenny Bae and Harmie Constantino.
"To be honest, I'm not surprised," Mitsunaga said. "Everyone has been working really hard and it's about time it finally shows. All the little drills that we always do, I think the payoff is showing. Everyone's game is solid. The fact that we have to drop a 75 on this golf course is awesome."
Overall, Hung is tied for fourth at 2-under 142, five strokes off the leader Marta Perez SanMartin of Florida. In addition, Gabriela Coello and Mitsunaga are tied for 21st at 146, Constantino is tied for 27th at 147 and Bae is tied for 38th at 149.
Hung's bogey-free day include birdies at No. 3 and No. 5 that quickly pushed her to 2-under. She then posted 12-consecutive pars before a birdie at No. 18 put a bow up her day.
"I hit the ball pretty good and pretty straight," Hung said. "Ever shot was pretty true to the pin, and that provided me with a lot of birdie chances."
"Jo had a really good round of golf," Brewer said. "I think it goes back to Gaby's 1-under yesterday. I think it kind of showed them it's out there, you can go shoot 2- or 3-under and don't settle for being 1-under. Rinko had a very solid round. She's been battling all spring, and it was good to see her rewarded."
Mitsunaga initiated her loop with a birdie but slipped back to even with her only bogey of the day at No. 4. Her lone non-par the rest of the day was a birdie at No. 11.
"It's been a long battle for me and for the team," Mitsunaga said. "For this tournament, we've been really working hard on playing smarter golf and just aiming for the middle of the greens. That's perfect for this golf course. It's very rewarding when you hit the shots that you want to. I'm excited to see where it goes tomorrow."
Hung agreed that the Bulldogs' game plan has been key to their results the first two days.
"I think we're well prepared before we tee off because Coach Brewer has pointed out some holes where we need to pay more attention," Hung said. "There were some hard pin positions. Today, I just followed those rules and stayed focused and stayed patient, and the result came out good."
Thursday's round was Georgia's third under-par team score of the season, following at 282 in the fall at the Mary Fossum Invitational and a 287 in the second round of the Gold Rush in February.
The 12th-ranked Gators are at 9-under 567 through 36 holes, followed by No. 11 South Carolina at 573, No. 6 Arkansas at 578, the Bulldogs at 579, No. 14 Auburn at 582, No. 4 Vanderbilt at 584, Ole Miss at 588, LSU at 591, Mississippi State at 592, Texas A&M and Alabama both at 593, Missouri at 597 and Kentucky at 603.
All 14 teams will play another stroke play round on Friday. Following that, the top-eight teams on the leaderboard will advance to a match play bracket to determine the SEC champion. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be on Saturday. The championship match will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sunday and will be televised live in its entirety on the SEC Network.
