BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Georgia women's golf team fired a solid 5-over 293 in the opening round of the SEC Championships on Wednesday at Greystone Golf and Country Club. The Bulldogs are in fifth place on the leaderboard, nine shots off the pace of No. 12 Florida and No. 14 Auburn.
"It was a good day and honestly very close to being a great day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We played the first 13-14 holes about as well as we've played all year, which we've been waiting on. I think we got a little excited, but then we finished strong. We finished with three birdies coming in to find ourselves in the top 5 and in a very solid position heading into round two."
The Bulldogs were around par as a team much of the day. Georgia turned at 2-over and then played the first two holes of the back side at 2-under. After playing Nos. 14-16 at 6-over, the Bulldogs wrapped up their day with a trio of birdies at No. 18 by Harmie Constantino, Rinko Mitsunaga and Jo Hua Hung.
Junior Gabriela Coello paced Georgia with a 1-under 71, her fifth par-or-better round of the season.
"I made putts," Coello said. "I know the greens better and I feel like I know the course way better this year. I had good speed yesterday and some really big putts just happened to drop today. That gave me the momentum to keep calm. I really wasn't attacking the pins very much, and I really think that helped me and helped me stay positive. I didn't get into too much trouble."
The Bulldogs received steady efforts from all five golfers in the lineup, also counting a 73 from Hung, a 74 from Constantino and a 75 from Mitsunaga while dropping Jenny Bae's 76.
"When you drop a 76, that's when you know we're doing good," Coello said. "To start getting hot in the postseason is what you want as a team. I'm excited. The next couple of weeks are going to really exciting if this is the type of round we put up in the first round on a golf course like this."
Individually, Coello is tied for sixth, Hung is tied for 19th, Constantino is tied for 28th, Mitsunaga is tied for 36th and Bae is tied for 46th.
Coello turned at even par after mixing a birdie at No. 5 and a bogey at No. 9 with seven pars. She birdied No. 11 and No. 13 to move to 2-under and dropped another stroke with a birdie at No. 17 but closed with a double-bogey.
Florida and Auburn shot 4-under 284s for grab the team lead, followed by No. 11 South Carolina at 287, No. 6 Arkansas at 291, the Bulldogs at 293, Tennessee and Mississippi State both at 294, No. 4 Vanderbilt at 296, Ole Miss at 298, Missouri and LSU at 299, Texas A&M at 300, Alabama at 301 and Kentucky at 304.
"We talked yesterday," Brewer said. "It's a golf course that I think fits us really well. We're as good as anyone here if we stay focused and keep plotting along."
Auburn's Julie McCarthy leads the individual field after posting a 4-under 68, a shot better than Julia Johnson of Ole Miss and Marta Perez San Martin of Florida.
All 14 teams will play two more rounds of stroke play on Thursday and Friday. Following the third round, the top-eight teams on the leaderboard will advance to a match play bracket to determine the SEC champion. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be on Saturday. The championship match will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sunday and will be televised live in its entirety on the SEC Network.
