ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia women's golf team posted an extremely balanced 11-over 299 in Thursday's stroke play qualifying round of the 47th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Bulldogs secured the No. 7 seed in the tournament's championship bracket, which will be contested on Friday and Saturday at the UGA Golf Course.
"We made the top-8 so we have a chance to win the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic," head coach Josh Brewer said. "This format is different. You want to make the top-8 so now we have to go worry about match play. Let's go win three matches and leave here with momentum heading to the SEC Championships."
The 12 teams in the field played a single round of stroke play on Thursday to determine seeds for the match play competition. Georgia tied with Ole Miss for sixth place on the leaderboard but was awarded the No. 7 seed via tiebreakers.
Freshman Harmie Constantino posted the Bulldogs' low loop of the day, a 2-over 74. Freshman Jenny Bae, freshman Jo-Hua Hung and senior Rinko Mitsunaga all shot 75 to provide Georgia's other three counting scores. Junior Kelsey Kurnett's 77 was the Bulldogs drop score.
"It's kind of who we've been all year," Brewer said. "We had a lot players 2-over, 3-over, 1-over. Eventually, someone needs to break out and make some birdies for us if we're going to get to the top of the leaderboard. We've got to continue to learn from this because at SECs it's going to be a lot tougher competition than even today."
Overall, Constantino tied for 15th, Bae, Hung and Mitsunaga all tied for 23rd and Kurnett tied for 39th.
Georgia will face second-seeded Kennesaw State in Friday's quarterfinal round, teeing off from hole No. 1 between 8:40-9:12 a.m.
Following the quarterfinals on Friday morning, the teams will return to the course for the semifinal round in the afternoon. The championship match will begin at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Half of the 12 teams in the field are from the SEC. The league will contest its championship next week at Greystone Golf & Country Club outside Birmingham.
