ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia women's golf team defeated Kennesaw State, 3.5-1.5, in the quarterfinals of the 47th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday morning before the Bulldogs dropped a tight 3-2 decision to No. 10 South Carolina in the afternoon's semifinals.
Georgia will now face No. 6 Arkansas in the tourney's third-place match at the UGA Golf Course on Saturday, teeing off between 8:40-9:12 a.m. from hole No. 1.
Three of five matches went all 18 holes in the Bulldogs' win over Kennesaw State. Jo Hua Hung captured a 2-and-1 victory over Medy Thavong and Rinko Mitsunaga topped Charlotte Charrayre, 3-up, to give Georgia two points. Jenny Bae, Harmie Constantino and Kelsey Kurnett all halved their matches for the remaining 1.5 points for the Bulldogs.
"Literally everyone contributed points to our victory over Kennesaw State, with Rinko and Jo winning their matches and Jenny, Harmie and Kelsey halving theirs," Brewer said. "You can't ask for much more than that as a coach."
Mitsunaga and Hung again captured victories for Georgia in the afternoon, both earning 1-up decisions.
South Carolina held solid leads over the Bulldogs in the other three matches most of the day before Georgia rallied. Most notably, Constantino was 4-down through 12 holes but took Nos. 13-16 to pull her match back to all-square. The Gamecocks' Anita Uwadia secured No. 17 to thwart Constantino's run and go back 1-up before the golfers halved the final hole.
"South Carolina is a top-10 team and finished second at the SECs last year with almost the exact same lineup," Brewer said. "I couldn't be prouder of how we battled all day. We fought back and made it count all the way to the final hole of the match."
The Bulldogs will wrap up the Liz Murphey by facing another SEC foe on Saturday.
"It's a chance play the defending SEC Champion and hopefully get a victory and establish even more momentum than we have in first two days this week," Brewer said. "We have a lot of respect for their program. If we want to win an SEC title we need to beat teams of Arkansas' calibre."
