ATHENS, Ga. – Kicking off the Southeastern Conference schedule, the No. 2-ranked Georgia women's tennis team travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to play No. 30 Tennessee Saturday with a 12 p.m. ET first serve at Barksdale Stadium.
In what was supposed to be the outdoor opener last Saturday, the Bulldogs defeated then-No. 31 Georgia Tech, 4-0, in the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts. Georgia improved to 8-0 – the program's best start since 2009.
The Volunteers (9-2) went 3-0 last weekend with a Saturday win over Purdue and two Sunday wins over fellow Tennessee schools, UT Martin and ETSU. Tennessee's two losses this season came from now-ranked No. 12 LSU and No. 29 Old Dominion.
"There are thirteen big matches coming up in front of us with SEC play," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "Every time we play it is going to be great and especially when you hit the road. It is fun to go into these potential hostile environments with big crowds that are vocal. We just have to be ready to face different difficult situations and find out how good we are."
In the all-time Georgia-Tennessee series, the Bulldogs lead 46-9, including seven in a row. Last season, the Bulldogs beat the Volunteers 7-0 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The first singles court is projected to be a rematch from last year with Bulldog sophomore Katarina Jokic, the top player in the ITA singles rankings, pinned against Vol senior Sadie Hammond. Jokic, of Novi Grad, Bosnia, sports a 16-2 record, while Hammond is 12-6 overall.
Tennessee's win leader and only ranked singles player, No. 121 Johanna Silva, occupies court three with an 18-3 overall mark. Silvia, a junior, is projected to face off with Bulldog freshman Lourdes Carle, ranked 83rd, who is fresh off of clinching the Georgia Tech win.
The Volunteers' contain one of the nation's best doubles tandems in Hammond and sophomore Kaitlin Staines, which has helped Tennessee take 10-of-11 doubles points this season. The duo is ranked No. 9 in ITA doubles with a 15-0 overall mark including nine dual wins. On court one, Georgia will send the newly paired twosome of Jokic and Carle out to battle Hammond/Staines. In the first time playing with each other since the fall, Jokic and Carle took down a ranked GT squad last weekend to improve to 2-1 together.
