Bulldogs Battle Clemson Saturday
February 01, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS----Fifth-ranked Georgia returns to the courts Saturday at 4 p.m. when it faces Clemson at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on the Tigers campus.
Â
The Bulldogs (2-0) hold a 31-19 edge in the series history with the Tigers (4-3). Georgia has won nine of the past 10 meetings including a 7-0 shutout last season in Athens. Six Bulldogs are nationally-ranked in singles headlined by No. 1 Katarina Jokic while Clemson's top doubles duo of seniors Fernanda Navarro and Marie Leduc is ranked No. 3.
Â
Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez, ranked No. 14 nationally, leads the team with a 16-3 record followed by Jokic at 11-2 and sophomore Vivian Wolff, ranked No. 54, at 10-2. At this point in the season, the Bulldogs are trying different doubles combinations.Â
Â
"It's fun to go on the road because next week we got another big trip, going all the way out to Seattle," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "We've played Clemson for a long time, and it's a good rivalry. It's always a good experience for our players, for bonding and learning how to compete in an environment where we don't have our fans right behind us."
Â
Georgia opened the dual match indoor season by winning a pair of matches during an ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Athens to qualify for the National Team Indoor Championships set for Feb. 8-11 in Seattle. The Bulldogs registered wins over South Florida and Kansas State. Most recently, the Tigers dropped a 6-1 decision to rival No. 15 South Carolina Thursday. Clemson began the year 4-0 but has since lost to LSU and Florida State at an ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Tallahassee and then to USC.
