Georgia Lands a Season-High 197.475 in Win over Arkansas

February 01, 2019 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. ---- The No. 6 University of Georgia GymDogs earned a season-high score of 197.475- 196.125 to claim their first Southeastern Conference (SEC) win of the season over the No. 24 Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday night in Stegeman Coliseum.

Two Georgia standouts, junior Sabrina Vega and senior Sydney Snead posted a 9.900 or better in three events to lead the GymDogs to victory. Freshman Mikayla Magee posted two season high scores on beam and floor and junior Rachel Dickson landed a 9.950 on floor and 9.900 on bars.

"This score feels great," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. "After our three meets back-to-back we did push them this week in the gym because we need to be prepared for the end of the season when you have two regional meets, two national meets. They probably felt a little fatigued but to see them do this mentally means that they are really capable of it and I hope they can know that at the end of the day that's what it takes and they can push through."

The GymDogs showed continued strength on vault matching a season-best 49.400 for the event.  Senior Sydney Snead led the squad with a matched career-best of 9.950.  Freshman Rachael Lukacs posted a season-high score of 9.925, followed by Vega who kept pace with her career-high, set last week at Auburn, with a 9.900. Dickson hit a 9.850 for her vault, while freshmen Mikayla Magee and Rachel Baumann earned a pair of 9.775's.

Georgia carried that momentum to bars, matching a season-high 49.275, previously set against Alabama.  The GymDog all-arounders, Snead and Dickson, each contributed a 9.900 for the event, followed by freshman Alexa Al-Hameed with a 9.850.  Freshman Megan Roberts and sophomore Emily Schild swung to scores of 9.825 and 9.800, respectively.

"We kept saying stay in the moment," Kupets Carter continued. "So yes, every event we would do the same thing where we let the momentum build but then we had to regroup, reset with a new group of girls going up on the next equipment. It was about them staying focused mentally, getting more in autopilot now that we have had several good practices in the gym. They can let themselves do that now."

In the lead off and anchor positions on beam, Snead and Vega earned scores of 9.900 and 9.925, respectively. Dickson, Magee, and sophomore Marissa Oakley also contributed scores as Georgia marked a new season-high score of 49.325 for the event.

An outstanding floor routine from Dickson earned her a season-best 9.950, which was then rivaled by Vega (9.950) in the anchor position. Lukacs also posted a 9.900, with a season-high 9.875 from freshman Rachel Baumann, and a 9.825 from Snead to earn another season-best score of 49.475 on floor.

The GymDogs continue SEC action next week at Missouri with competition scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, February 8, in Columbia, Missouri.
