Hartman's Records Highlight Opening Day of Tennessee Invite

November 21, 2019 | Swimming & Diving

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With a pair of record-breaking performances, freshman Zoie Hartman bolstered a solid first day for the University of Georgia swimming and diving team at the Tennessee Invitational.

With a time of 1:53.69, Hartman turned in the second-fastest 200 IM in school history, only trailing the 1:52.64 posted by Melanie Margalis at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Earlier in the prelims, Hartman had already reached the all-time standings at 1:55.65, posting what then stood as the fifth-fastest IM. In the closing 400 medley relay, her time of 57.84 became the fastest 100-yard breaststroke split in program history, in addition to swimming the second leg of Georgia's third-place squad in the 200 free relay.

In the overall standings, the Georgia men lead the pack with 291 points, sitting 26 points ahead of second-place Indiana, while the Lady Bulldogs trail Tennessee by 12 points with their total of 308.

Along with Hartman's runner-up finish in the 200 IM, junior Courtney Harnish finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:37.16, dropping nearly 10 seconds from her seeded time at Florida. Fellow junior Olivia Anderson finished close behind in fifth place with a time of 4:43.75, setting a new personal best. Harnish and Anderson were joined by teammates Jordan Stout and Dakota Luther in posting B-cut times, while senior Veronica Burchill and junior Gabi Fa'amausili clinched in the 50 free prelims, as did junior Danielle Della Torre and sophomore Portia Brown in the 200 IM.

At the diving well, junior Zach Allen continued his winning ways, earning a third-consecutive victory with a PR mark of 371.85 in the 3-meter springboard. In the women's 1-meter, senior McKensi Austin finished a narrow second with a season-best 296.05, with teammate Freida Lim also qualifying for Zones with a score of 269.10.

For the men's team, senior Kevin Miller paced the Bulldogs with a third-place time of 4:16.41 in the 500 free. In prelims, Miller claimed ninth place on the all-time school rankings with a time of 4:15.70. Fellow senior Walker Higgins was outstanding in the morning session, dropping 13 seconds from his previous season high for a mark of 4:13.05, while Clayton Forde set a new personal best of 1:45.04 in the 200 IM.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog freshmen continued to assert themselves with Harry Homans and Zach Hils both turning in B-cut times in the IM, along with Dillon Downing in the 50 free. Juniors Greg Reed, Grant Norgan and Aaron Apel also posted provisional cuts in the 500 free. In relays, the A-teams placed fourth in both the 400 medley and 200 free.

The Tennessee Invitational continues tomorrow with preliminary action beginning at 10 a.m. with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's 3-meter, and both rounds of the men's 1-meter. The night session begins at 5:30 p.m. and features finals in each of the swimming events and women's 3-meter, as well as the 800 free relay.
