November 20, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia swimming and diving returns to the water this weekend for the Tennessee Invitational at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bulldogs and hosting Tennessee Volunteers will be joined by fellow national powers Virginia and Indiana, as well as nearby DII Carson-Newman, in a competitive midseason meet.
The three-day invitational opens Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m with preliminaries., followed by diving competition at 1 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The same format will repeat on Friday and Saturday, offering a preview of the scheduling format seen later in the season at the SEC and NCAA Championships. The invitational will also provide the first opportunity this season for Bulldogs to compete in both the 1,650 freestyle and platform diving competition. Live results from the meet will be available on the MeetMobile app.
In the latest CSCAA/TYR rankings, the Lady Bulldogs moved up four spots to No. 8, while the men climbed two to No. 12, following a 14-win outing against Florida on Nov. 1. In Gainesville, freshman Zoie Hartman won three races with B-cut times in each, earning her SEC Female Swimmer of the Week honors, while teammate Courtney Harnish swept the 200 and 500 freestyle for the fourth time this season.
For the men's team, sophomore Andrew Abruzzo set another personal-best time in the 1000 freestyle and also took first in the 200 IM. Freshman Harry Homan was named SEC Male Freshman of the Week for the second time this season as he won the 200 butterfly and finished second in the 200 backstroke. At the diving well, junior Zach Allen swept both springboard events, nearly posting a new career-high mark in the 3-meter.
Tennessee enters this weekend with a pair of top-10 teams, ranking second in the women's poll and eighth in the men's. Senior Erika Brown stands as one of the nation's top swimmers, currently holding the top time in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 butterfly. Fellow seniors Alec Connolly and Taylor Abbott rank fifth in the 100 free and eighth in the 1000 free respectively, while sophomore Michael Houlie stands fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
Virginia (Men's No. 18 / Women's No. 4) features freshman Katie Douglass, who has opened her Cavalier career with top-five national times in six events. With the top marks in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM, Douglass' matchups with Hartman will highlight the weekend's action.
Following last year's bronze medal at the men's championship, the Indiana men remain among the nation's best, ranking fourth in the CSCAA poll, with the women ranked 16th. Senior Mohamed Hassan ranks first in the 200 IM, as well as third in the 100 free, 200 free and 400 IM, while freshman Brendan Burns sits at third nationally in the 200 butterfly. Junior Gabriel Fantoni stands fifth in the 100 backstroke and sophomore Zane Backes is sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
Following this weekend's action, Georgia will take its winter break from dual competition before the diving team heads back to Knoxville for the Tennessee Diving Invitation on Jan. 3-5, with the whole team returning to take on Texas A&M in the home opener on Jan. 11 at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
