KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the second consecutive night, freshman Zoie Hartman rewrote the University of Georgia swimming and diving record books at the Tennessee Invitational on Friday.
Hartman broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke twice on Friday. During prelims, she went 58.76 to move past the previous record of 59.05 set by Kristy Kowal at the 1998 NCAA Championships, the program's longest-standing record entering this season. Hartman then lowered the mark again with a time of 58.27 in finals. Hartman's winning time gives her the nation's fastest 100 breast time at this point in the 2019-20 season.
Sophomore Dakota Luther also altered the record books with her third-place time of 52.09 in the 100 fly, placing her eighth in program history and besting her PR from last year's NCAAs by .01 seconds. Along with Luther, senior Veronica Burchill and junior Courtney Harnish tied for sixth with season-best times of 52.55. In the morning session, Harnish set a new personal best in the event with a time of 52.52.
The pair later finished in the top three of the 200 freestyle with times of 1:44.62 and 1:44.86 respectively. Additionally, sophomore Callie Dickinson placed first in the B-final of the 400 IM with a personal-best time of 4:11.75, while senior Sofia Carnevale made the final of the 100 breast and junior Portia Brown advanced in the 100 back.
In the men's 100 fly, junior Camden Murphy was victorious for the fourth time this season with a season-best time of 45.36, while senior Clayton Forde notched his top time of the year at 3:42.14 in winning the 400 IM. Forde was joined in the final by sophomore Andrew Abruzzo and junior Greg Reed, who racked up season-best times earlier in the prelims.
In the 200 free, junior Grant Norgan (1:36.11) and freshman Zach Hils (1:36.16) both reached the top five, while Youssef Said (46.56) finished fifth in the 100 backstroke and Jack Dalmolin placed seventh in the 100 breast.
At the diving well, junior Zach Allen earned his fourth-consecutive win with a career best score of 354.80 in the 1-meter springboard. In the women's 3-meter, senior McKensi Austin narrowly missed her second win of the weekend as her score of 310.15 finished just .05 points behind Grace Cable of Tennessee. In the prelims, Austin did take first with a score of 313.80.
In the closing 800 freestyle relays, both the men's and women's teams earned a pair of top-four finishes, with the Bulldogs' A-team posting a 6:25.09 and the Lady Bulldogs' top squad turning in a time of 7:04.55. Both of Georgia's A-teams finished fourth in the opening 200 medley relay.
In the overall standings, the Bulldog men enter Saturday's competition in a close battle with Indiana, trailing by just seven points at 648, while the Lady Bulldogs sit in second with 663.5.
The short course portion of the Invitational closes tomorrow with the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle, platform diving and the 400 freestyle relay.
