No. 2 Georgia Defeated by No. 1 Auburn in Fall Finale
November 15, 2019 | Equestrian
AUBURN, Ala. --- The second-ranked University of Georgia equestrian team concluded the fall portion of its schedule with a 16-4 loss to the top-ranked Auburn Tigers as the rain fell at the Auburn University Equestrian Center on Friday.
The Bulldogs finished the fall with a 4-2 record and 1-2 mark in Southeastern Conference action, while the Tigers will head into the spring undefeated. Georgia still leads the all-time series with Auburn, 30-17, including an 11-8 mark on the Plains.
"Today did not go how we wanted it to, which is really unfortunate; however, I really am impressed with a lot more consistency that we're seeing in the rides- higher scores, and fewer penalties," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. "This is a very good and strong team who is deserving of high scores. There were so many uncontrollables here with the weather and I just love how our team handled it."
Competition started with Flat in the covered arena. After dropping the first ride to the Tigers, senior Ali Tritschler edged her opponent by one point with a score of 73 to put Georgia on the board. Auburn claimed the next three points to win the event, 4-1.
Fences began as the rain picked up and the wind continued. The Tigers swept the Bulldogs, adding five points to their total. Freshman Rachel McMullen led Georgia with a score of 88, followed by Tritchler who received an 87.
Georgia claimed two points in Horsemanship. Sophomore Kaitlin Dierks rode to a score of 75 to edge Maddie Spak's 74.5 and junior Lexie Lane scored a 73.5 to overtake Taylor Searles' 69.
The Bulldogs added one point in Reining after Courtney Blumer defeated Jen Kasper 69.5-67.5.
"There were a lot of points that were very, very close," Boenig continued. "We have a lot that we've built on and now we just have to continue that in the spring. This makes us hungry, we've been in this position before and we've made lemonade out it. That is going to be our goal and we head into practice and look forward to hosting Auburn in the spring."
Georgia will start back competition in College Station, Texas, versus Texas A&M on Saturday, Feb. 1.
