BISHOP, Ga. --- The No. 2 University of Georgia equestrian team's comeback fell short as the Bulldogs dropped a 10-8 decision to No. 4 Texas A&M University at the UGA Equestrian Complex on Friday.
Sophomore Sara Lewis earned her first career Most Outstanding Performance (MOP) honors riding to a score of 74.5.
"We made some little errors, we made some great spots and plays, but we have to finish it," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. "They are angry. They know where they can clean up. [Texas] A&M did a great job—not taking anything away from them. We know we can perform a little bit more and better. This is good because we have an opportunity to show what that ride is tomorrow. No better plan than to go out there and compete again, and the team is hungry to do it."
Georgia (1-1, 0-1 SEC) fell behind in Fences, only claiming one point. Senior Kate Kramer pushed her point with a score of 81, before senior Ali Tritschler defeated Texas A&M's Haley Redifer, 83-72.
The Aggies (2-1, 1-0 SEC) notched three more points in Horsemanship to lengthen their lead. Lewis' MOP ride earned a point for the Bulldogs, edging her opponent 74.5-73.5, before junior Lexie Lane matched her opponent's 73.5.
Texas A&M held a 6-2 advantage after two events.
After two rides in Reining and two in Flat, the Bulldogs evened the score at six points each. Junior Jordan Carpenter and senior Julia Spreng won their points in the Western ring, while senior Isabelle Heckler and junior Hayley Mairano added two points in Flat.
The Aggies and Bulldogs alternated the next four points to knot the score at eight with one ride left in each event. Georgia sophomores Courtney Blumer and Lindsay Guynn earned points in Reining as Texas A&M claimed the points in Flat.
Texas A&M grabbed the final rides with one point in Flat and one in Reining to secure the upset.
Georgia's Reining squad outscored Texas A&M, 4-1, while the Flat group was edged 3-2.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 26 against No. 6 Southern Methodist University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and admission to the UGA Equestrian Complex is free.
