No. 25 Vanderbilt Tops Georgia

September 30, 2018 | Soccer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The Georgia soccer team fell to No. 25 Vanderbilt, 5-0, in a Southeastern Conference matchup on Sunday evening at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

"Vanderbilt played very well and they scored four of their goals off set pieces, which is something we continue to work on," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "I don't think our preparation was as good as it could have been and we didn't execute in the game. That cost us in several different occasions- I think they had one goal from the run of play.  Set pieces are something we noticed that they do very well and they did it very well today. It came back to hurt us."

Georgia (4-5-3, 1-2-1 SEC) was able to take six shots, but the Vanderbilt (11-1, 4-0 SEC) goalkeeper Lauren Demarchi was there to keep the UGA offense in check.

During the first half of play, Vanderbilt took a 4-0 lead over the Bulldogs. The Commodores struck first in the 17th minute and extended its lead three minutes later with a goal off a corner kick. A Georgia foul gave Vanderbilt a free kick and the Commodores were able to get another goal 27 minutes into the game. Before the half was over, the Commodores capitalized on another free kick opportunity.

The Bulldogs created four opportunities in the first half. The most promising look came after Daria Stan delivered a great ball in the box, but Ashley Andersen's header was saved by the Vanderbilt goalkeeper.

Vanderbilt's efficiency continued in the second half although Georgia was able to hold the Commodores to only four shots in the final 45 minutes. The Commodores added another goal at the 60 minute mark to defeat the Bulldogs, 5-0.

Georgia returns home to take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex before traveling to Auburn to face the Tigers on Sunday, October 7.
