Georgia Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 12 South Carolina
October 04, 2018 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --– Georgia soccer (4-5-3, 1-3-1 SEC) dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 12 South Carolina (10-2, 3-1 SEC) at the Turner Soccer Complex on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs matched up in nearly every category including shots (10-11), corners (2-4) and saves (3-4), but ultimately came up short on the scoreboard against the two-time defending SEC champions.
"I am really proud of our effort," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "When you play a team like South Carolina, they don't give you too many chances and you need to take advantage of the ones we do get. Unfortunately, we were not able to do that in the final third and then they got us on a set piece early in the second half. But again, I am proud of our resolve. We had a good week of training, and it showed in the way we played- we passed the ball pretty well. Overall, it was a really good effort for us."
Georgia won the ball early and created opportunity with all three shots in the first half on target. Although the Gamecocks took seven shots in the first 45 minutes of play, Georgia goalkeeper freshman Emory Wegener was able to keep the scoreboard clean at the half after making two saves.
Coming back to the pitch, the Gamecocks found themselves in the Georgia corner. A shot toward the box connected with Tatumn Milazzo's head to bring the score to 1-0 at the 45:52 mark.
Sophomore Jessie Denney had a chance for the equalizer in the 57th minute as her cross was inches away from hitting the net but the Gamecock goalkeeper knocked it back into play. The Bulldogs kept fighting placing six more shots on goal, but ultimately fell to the Gamecocks with a final score of 1-0.
Georgia returns to action on Sunday, October 7 on the road at Auburn. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
