Georgia Falls to Auburn on the Road

October 07, 2018 | Soccer

AUBURN, Ala. --- A second half goal lifted the Auburn Tigers (10-3-1, 2-3-1 SEC) over the Georgia Bulldogs (4-7-3, 1-4-1 SEC) on Sunday with a 1-0 final score at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

"This is a tough one to swallow," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "We competed hard today and there were moments when we played really well. This game can be cruel at times when you play well and don't get the result. I was proud of the team's effort and the willingness to battle and compete today under tough conditions. I thought we handled that well but unfortunately in the second half there was one direct ball that got in behind us and they were able to finish. I am proud of the team's effort and commitment today."

The Bulldogs created chances in the first half, but were unable to capitalize in the final third. Freshman goalkeeper Emory Wegener made three saves to keep the scoreboard clean after 45 minutes of play.

Less than a minute into the second half the Tigers shot the ball to the back of the net, but offsides was called resulting in no goal.

The Bulldogs and Tigers remained evenly matched until Auburn scored on a free kick from close to midfield in the 65th minute of the game.

Sophomore Reagan Glisson led with four of the Bulldogs' eight shots, two of which were on target. Freshmen Abby Boyan and Bella Ponzi as well as sophomore Landon Lambert and junior Keely Cartrett contributed attempts in the shots column.  Georgia held Auburn to 11 shots, while only allowing one corner kick.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, October 12 when the Tennessee Volunteers come to Athens. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex.
