Georgia Ties No. 17 Tennessee, 0-0

October 12, 2018 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. ---
The University of Georgia soccer team (4-7-4, 1-4-2 SEC) forced double overtime against the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers, resulting in a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of action on Friday night at the Turner Soccer Complex.

"I thought we did a really nice job defending and getting numbers behind the ball," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Tennessee is a mature and talented team and I thought we did a good job in being resolute in the way we defended. We fought hard for balls and it's a sign of our team maturing. We have a young group so to see them step up in a game like this is reassuring."

Georgia freshman Emory Wegener made nine saves to keep the Volunteers off the board, despite their 24 attempts.

"That was a fun game. Those are the games I like," Wegener said following the game. "I'm grateful some of those close shots didn't go in. When it is that close you are just hoping for it to get cleared out. I think Caroline (Chipman) and Kayla (Bruster) did a good job of tracking back and getting those balls out."

The Bulldogs put two shots on frame in the first half, but the Volunteer goalkeeper made the saves to keep the scoreboard clean.

Returning to the field, sophomore Reagan Glisson took two corner kicks and a shot early, but the Bulldogs could not capitalize. Tennessee became more aggressive as the half progressed and ended regulation with 17 shots compared to Georgia's four.

The Volunteers nearly ended the chances of overtime with five seconds remaining in regulation when Tennessee forward Erin Gilroy's shot hit the post.  Georgia headed into overtime for the fourth time this season.

After the Volunteers failed to connect in Georgia's corner twice late in the first overtime the game extended into double overtime. Continued pressure and stout defenses solidified the 0-0 final score.

Glisson led Georgia with two shots, while, sophomores Jessie Denney and Katie Ralys as well as freshman Weldon Kolker each contributed to the shot column.

Georgia is back in action next week as the Bulldogs travel to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators on Thursday, October 18 at 7 p.m., before returning home for the final home game of the season.  Georgia will play Alabama on Senior Night at the Turner Soccer Complex on Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. Admission to the Turner Soccer Complex is free.
