Five Dogs Compete At European Championships

August 21, 2018 | Track & Field

BERLIN, Germany --- Georgia track and field head coach Petros Kyprianou served as the head coach of Estonia and five current, past or future Bulldogs competed at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, recently.

Senior Denzel Comenentia (hammer throw), Louisa Grauvogel (heptathlon), Karl Saluri (decathlon), Maicel Uibo (decathlon) and freshman Karel Tilga (decathlon) all lined up for their respective nations during the seven-day meet held from Aug. 6-12.

Comenentia, a native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, worked up to a third throw of 231 feet, 11 inches and finished 22ndin the qualifying round of the hammer throw.  He was the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Men's Field Athlete of the Year after winning both the hammer and the shot put at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships.  His victories helped the Bulldogs secure their first national team title.

Grauvogel, a native of Saarland, Germany, was on pace to score a personal record in the heptathlon through six events.  She scored 5,412 points, including personal bests of 20-2.25 in the long jump, 5-9.25 in the high jump and 23.10 in the 200-meter dash, and was on the way to breaking into the field's top 10.  However, Grauvogel was in a minor car accident on the way back from the track to her hotel before her final event on day two and was unable to finish her seventh and final event (800m).

Grauvogel was a First Team scoring All-American in the pentathlon indoors to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to their first team national championship.  She was then runner-up in the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor meet as the Georgia women finished second by one point.

With Kyprianou as the team's leader, the Bulldogs had a trio of Estonian competitors in the decathlon. Saluri, who is from Kuimetsa, Estonia, and completed his Georgia career in June, secured personal bests in both the high jump (6-4) and shot put (47-8.50).  But he fouled out in the discus and did not complete the competition.

Saluri finished second in the decathlon at this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the decathlon to also do his part during Georgia's run to the national championship.

Uibo, a native of Polva, Estonia, who was the 2014-15 NCAA champion in the decathlon for the Bulldogs, posted the fastest time of his career in the 400m (50.18) during day one. He pulled out of the competition before the ninth event (the javelin) after injuring himself in the pole vault.

Tilga, who just started his first semester at UGA, hails from Tartu, Estonia, and is aiming to continue the trend established by Uibo and Saluri in Athens.  Tilga completed seven of 10 events of the decathlon before retiring prior to the pole vault because of an injury sustained during the warm-ups for the event.
