Georgia Season Ends at World Series Against Florida State, 7-2

June 02, 2018 | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY– The seventh-seeded Georgia Bulldogs' 2017-18 campaign came to a close at the Women's College World Series on Saturday afternoon at the USA Hall of Fame Stadium with a dropped contest against the sixth-seeded Florida State Seminoles, 7-2.

With sophomore Mary Wilson Avant in the circle for Georgia (48-13), Florida State (53-12) struck first in the second, capitalizing on an Anna Shelnutt walk with an RBI double from junior Zoe Casas for the 1-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning from the Bulldog defense in the third, the Seminoles tacked on a trio of runs in the following frame. With the bases loaded, Casas picked up two more RBI with a base hit up the middle, scoring sophomore pinch runner Deja Bush and sophomore Dani Morgan. Freshman Elizabeth Mason provided a sacrifice fly to right field to score junior Cali Harrod from third for the 4-0 Florida State margin.

The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fifth. Senior Cortni Emanuel and sophomore Ciara Bryan reached base on a respective walk and error. The next at-bat, sophomore Justice Milz took a 1-2 pitch off the right field fence, sending Emanuel and Bryan home to cut the Seminole advantage in half.

The fifth inning saw two more Seminole runs pushed home, with three consecutive singles from freshman Sydney Sherrill and sophomores Shelnutt and Morgan, who tallied two RBI on her base hit to right. A bases-loaded walk in the sixth plated one Florida State run for the 7-2 final, as junior left-handed pitcher Meghan King improved to 23-6 on the year.

Headed into postseason play, the Bulldogs garnered the No. 7 seed after a 43-11 regular season, opening 2018 action with a 25-game win streak – tying an all-time record – and taking all but one Southeastern Conference series. Hosting both the Regional and the Super Regional in Athens, Georgia secured a spot in Oklahoma City with five straight wins. In the World Series, the Bulldogs faced elimination against Florida State after a 11-3 loss to Florida in the opening round.

The Georgia roster includes three All-Americans in Emanuel, who also received the New Balance/Golden Shoe Award for the best base stealer in the country, senior pitcher Brittany Gray and junior Alyssa DiCarlo. Alongside the SEC Coach of the Year Lu Harris-Champer, five Bulldogs also earned All-SEC status – Emanuel, Gray, DiCarlo, and sophomores Milz and Bryan.
