#5 Georgia Beats Tigers 8-6 After a Back-and-Forth Battle

April 06, 2018 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. — The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs softball team defeated Missouri 8-6 at Jack Turner Stadium on Friday evening.

The Georgia (34-4) offense was the driving force of the Bulldog win. Led by sophomore second baseman Justice Milz who recorded Georgia's 50thhomerun this season and senior leftfielder Cortni Emanuel who tied a season high with three hits. The Bulldogs had six, two-out RBI from Milz (3), Emanuel (1) and sophomore first baseman Alysen Febrey (2).

Sophomore pitcher Mary Wilson Avant started her fourth game of the season against the Missouri Tigers (20-20). Junior Kylie Bass tossed five and two-thirds innings in relief and improved to 12-1 this season in the circle.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first after an RBI groundout from junior shortstop Alyssa DiCarlo scored Emanuel. The Tigers retaliated in the second to take the lead from the Bulldogs, 2-1. Bass entered the game and pitched around a runner on second with only one out to prevent any increase in the Tigers' lead.

Febrey laced a double into right center field during the third to push Milz and DiCarlo past the plate. The Bulldogs reclaimed a one-run lead over the Tigers, 3-2.

The Bulldogs led off the fourth with two triples from senior rightfielder Kendall Burton and sophomore centerfielder Ciara Bryan scoring Burton. The last time Georgia hit two triples in a game was against Delaware State on Mar. 12, 2017. Burton's run was followed by a single from Emanuel that scored sophomore third baseman Jordan Doggett

After three scoreless innings for the Tigers, they responded with two, two-run home runs to regain the lead over the Bulldogs, 6-5, in the top of the sixth.

Georgia rallied in the sixth. With Doggett and Emanuel on base and two outs, Milz took to the plate and hit a three-run home run to repossess the lead, 8-6.

Bass worked a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the seventh to secure the victory for Georgia.

Georgia will be back at the Jack Turner Stadium tomorrow for game two of the series against Missouri. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m., EDT. Saturday's contest will air nationally on ESPNU.

Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
"I was impressed with the whole team tonight. We had so much heart and so much fight and we really just came to play ball tonight. The crowd tonight was awesome. They were loud and into the game. They reacted to things that we were seeing and it just created an incredible atmosphere for us."

Sophomore Justice Milz
"Coach just kept reassuring me that I was in control and reminded me that I just needed to hit big. I was so proud of Cortni tonight, she was swinging tonight and really kept us going up the middle. She gave us the confidence to keep going tonight and it's always fun to have multiple teammates on base."
