Georgia Seals Spot in Semifinals of NCEA National Championship

WACO, Texas – With an 11-4 quarterfinals victory against the No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks, the top-ranked Georgia Bulldog equestrian team advanced to the semifinals of the NCEA Championship at the Extraco Event Center on Thursday.
One of four teams remaining, the Bulldogs will face off with No. 4 Texas A&M Thursday afternoon. The Aggies defeated No. 5 SMU to seal their spot in the semifinals. Horsemanship and Equitation over Fences are slated for approximately 3:30 p.m. CT.
In the 2018 regular season, the Bulldogs swept the series with the Aggies, 2-0. The last meeting between the two teams in the NCEA Championship came in the matchup for the 2017 title, when Texas A&M bested Georgia, 11-5.
Morning competition was highlighted by a 3-1 showing from Horsemanship and a sweep from Equitation on the Flat, providing an early 7-1 lead for the Bulldogs at the halfway point.
In Horsemanship, South Carolina posted the first point, edging a score of 136 from Sammie Johnson with a 138.5 from Carolina Gute – but the Bulldogs responded with the final three points. Payton Anderson's 149 overtook Megan Overberg's 141, and Graysen Stroud bested Maddie Thiel's 150 with a 151.5. After South Carolina's ride from Paige Stopperich was held under review, Bailey Anderson's score of 142 topped the final 138.
For the first point of the day in Equitation on the Flat, Addy Cord rode to a 159 past a 148 from South Carolina's Lizzie Van der Walde. Grace Bridges' ride of 165 provided the next Georgia point, while Maddie Newman supplied a high-score of 170 over South Carlina's 163. Maddy Darst sealed the 7-1 score with a 156, enough to knock off a 150 from the Gamecocks' Chloe Schmidt.
As the afternoon progressed, Reining and Equitation over Fences secured the Georgia victory.
In Reining, the Georgia-South Carolina riders split scores, with Annabeth Payne and Kyndall Harper supplying the final two points of the event. Payne slid by a 131 from South Carolina's Jordan Scott with a 132, before Kyndall Harper topped Paisley Roberts's 135 with a 140.
Equitation over Fences featured event-high scores from Addy Cord at 172 and Emma Mandarino at 168. South Carolina's Madison Sellman opened the event with a Gamecock point, while Maddy Darst's 159 was pushed by Lizzie Van der Walde.
