#6 Georgia Blanks USC Upstate in Five Innings, 10-0
April 18, 2018 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. — The sixth-ranked Georgia softball team (38-6) shut out USC Upstate (29-16) Wednesday evening at Jack Turner Stadium in five innings, 10-0.
The shutout of the Spartans is Georgia's 20th shutout this season and ties for the fifth most shutouts in a Bulldog season (2009, 2015).
Mary Wilson Avant (5-1) started in the circle for the Bulldogs. Avant pitched four innings allowing just two hits. She struck out three Spartans and walked two. Keara Napoli, in her fourth appearance of the season, completed the shutout, relief pitching one inning.
Alyssa DiCarlo led Georgia's offensive effort with two home runs. Her 16 home runs on the season cracks the top-ten most homeruns in a season by a Bulldog. Also, it was her third game of the season with multiple home runs and the fifth of her career. DiCarlo, along with Cortni Emanuel, each scattered three hits while Justice Milz and Jordan Doggett had two.
Dicarlo hit her 15th home run of the season, scoring Emanuel, to put the Bulldogs on the board 2-0 at the end of the first.
The Bulldogs offensive charge continued in the second. With two on and two out, Emanuel doubled, driving in two runners. Milz singled and advanced Emanuel home. DiCarlo earned her third RBI of the night by scoring Milz with a single to left field, extending the Bulldog lead to 6-0.
Doggett singled to bring home Ciara Bryan in the bottom of the third. Milz drove in Karlie Harding and Doggett with a single to right centerfield. At the bottom of the third Georgia led, 9-0.
The final Bulldog score came from DiCarlo's second home run in the fourth, this time to centerfield.
Up next, Georgia returns to SEC play on the road against Kentucky. The opening game of the three-game series will be Friday, Apr. 20, at 6 p.m. in Lexington.

On the team's performance…
I was really proud of our team and how we came out and hit the ball today. I thought the second inning with two outs and six productive at-bats in a row to score four runs, it was a really big inning for us. The top of the order was lights out. Alyssa was amazing with her two bombs on the night. [Jordan] at the bottom was outstanding turning the lineup over. The pitching was outstanding.
On facing Kentucky this weekend…
We are going out and work our process like we do every day. You cannot be too focused on your opponent. You have to focus on what you are doing, stay in the moment, and enjoy the opportunity.
Sophomore Mary Wilson Avant
On the team's performance today, and looking ahead for the weekend…
"I think we really came out and showed grit, competitiveness, and I think that will carry over to this weekend."
Junior Alyssa DiCarlo
On hitting a two-run home run in her first at bat…
"I've been going through sort of a rough patch, so that was awesome … to get runs like that, it's nice to get ahead early."
Looking ahead to Kentucky and Alabama…
"The SEC is like playing in a Super Regional every weekend, so we just kind of have to stay up, keep working hard."
