Georgia Sweeps Fences on Day One of NCEA Championships
April 18, 2018 | Equestrian
WACO, Texas – With a 4-0 victory against West Texas A&M in Equitation over Fences on day one of the 2018 National Collegiate Equestrian Championship, the Georgia equestrian team sealed a spot in the quarterfinals of the event championship.
Seeded second in Fences, Georgia totaled the highest event score of all competitors at 687. In the remaining three event championships – Equitation on the Flat, Horsemanship and Reining – the Bulldogs were seeded first and secured a position in the quarterfinals with first-round byes. Event rankings were determined by statistics of regular season head-to-head competition.
"It was great to see all those four scores at 160s and above," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. "There was consistency from every single ride. Even just the first fence – the entrance and momentum – those were great things for the rest of our trips here today. It was a great opener."
The first four Georgia rides of the NCEA Championship produced four Bulldog points. Junior Emma Mandarino led off the event with a 169, besting West Texas A&M's Daniella Salaverria for the first Georgia point.
Senior Addy Cord came next, scoring a team-best 176 on fences, which topped Callie Berg's mark of 151, handing the Bulldogs a two-point edge. To clinch Georgia's advancement, sophomore Maddy Darst contributed a score of 171 over Brittany Milam's 108.
Sophomore Ali Tritschler capped the opening day of competition for the Bulldogs with a 171 in the event, easing by AbbyRae Bradbury's 122 of West Texas A&M.
The Bulldogs will face TCU on Friday, who defeated Sweet Briar on Thursday, 2-1.
Up next, the team championships will take place on Thursday, with the Bulldogs facing off with South Carolina. Georgia will resume event competition on Friday. All champions will be crowned on Saturday.
