Georgia Closes Regular Season Action at Home

April 12, 2018 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Bulldog men's tennis team caps its regular season slate with a conference weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, playing host to the Vanderbilt Commodores and Kentucky Wildcats on Friday and Sunday.

Following a 5 p.m. matchup on Friday between Georgia and 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs celebrate their seniors, Wayne Montgomery and Andy Martinez, on Sunday at 1 p.m. against 18th-ranked Kentucky.

Prior to the regular season weekend finale, Kentucky played host to Vanderbilt on Sunday, topping the Commodores, 4-1. Vanderbilt looks to rebound on Friday, featuring the singles play of No. 39 Danny Valent and No. 21 Cam Klinger, as well as two top-ranked doubles tandems. Georgia's Jan Zielinski will continue his recent stint on the second court, set to face his highest-ranked opponent this season.

The Wildcats are led by their top-two singles proponents, the ninth-ranked Ryotaro Matsumura and the 53rd-ranked William Bushamuka. Matsumura, who ranks sixth in conference in dual singles wins at 16-2, is lined up to compete with the Bulldogs' 29th-ranked Wayne Montgomery on the first court. Half of Montgomery's 22 opponents in dual action this season have been ranked, with Matsumura marking the fifth in the top-10.

After this weekend, Georgia will head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the SEC Tournament on April 26 in search of its sixth-straight conference title.

On Saturday, senior day celebrations will begin approximately at 12:45 p.m. ET before the match. Admission is free. Live scoring and streaming will be available: http://gado.gs/8ue.

MONTGOMERY IN CAREER RECORDS LIST
Bulldog senior Wayne Montgomery will play in his final regular season home matches this weekend in Athens. Montgomery will finish his college career ranked in the top-5 of Georgia's all-time career singles wins list. Currently, the Somerset West, South Africa native has 130 total career singles wins, which ties Nate Schnugg for fourth all-time in Bulldog history. Montgomery is just two shy of moving into third place.

The veteran of the six singles courts, Montgomery leads the Bulldogs, alongside Jan Zielinski, with 28 singles wins. At 10-8 in dual play, the highest-ranked Bulldog at No. 19 has been a crucial factor on both the first and second courts. On the second, Montgomery won five of the last six matches on the second court, a clip that sits fourth-best in the conference, featuring a lone loss against now-No. 10 Arthur Rinderknech of Texas A&M. Montgomery has since returned to the first court, returning after a battle against No. 3 Nuno Borges to clinch Georgia's victory against Auburn on Sunday.

JAMIE HUNT FACES FAMILIAR FOE
Georgia associate head coach Jamie Hunt is in his first year back at his alma mater after serving as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for seven seasons. Hunt will face a few familiar faces this weekend having coached most of the current Commodores' roster. In fact, Hunt helped Vanderbilt land a top-5 signing class as the team's recruiting coordinator back in 2015.

THE COMMON DOUBLES DENOMINATORS
Jan Zielinski boasts an Oracle/ITA ranking on two different doubles teams, one with Loeb and the other with Walker Duncan. The junior is now paired with Alex Phillips on the second court. Wayne Montgomery has also showcased his consistency in doubles on the second court, with a team-best 18-9 overall clip on the year, and 10-5 in dual play. Teamed with both Duncan and Ponwith over the year, the current Montgomery-Ponwith tandem has provided two clinching matches in doubles since their pairing, and has won three of the last four completed matches.

ZIELINSKI PACING SINGLES ACTION
Jan Zielinski has shuffled between the second, third, fourth and fifth singles court this season – and posted a win on each. In 16 completed matches during dual play this year, the Warsaw, Poland native has won all but two contests, which ranks sixth in the conference's singles' leaders. In his overall career, the junior has collected a 39-16 clip in dual action. While the majority of his playing time has come on the fourth court this season, Zielinski debuted on the second court for the first time in his career this weekend against Alabama, defeating Thibault Cancel.

GEORGIA FLEXES DEPTH IN DUAL PLAY
Eight different Bulldogs have posted wins in singles this year, with four different Georgia players taking turns on the sixth court. Georgia is the only team in the ITA/Oracle Tennis Rankings to total six ranked singles players. Top-ranked Wake Forest and No. 5 Texas A&M follow with five ranked players in the singles lineup.
