Georgia Shuts Out Arkansas in SEC Opener

March 10, 2018 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – In the first conference action of the season, the Georgia Bulldogs softball team required only five innings to seal an 8-0 victory against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium.

"We'll take every one we can get," Georgia head coach Lu Harris-Champer said. "The SEC is the best conference in the country."

The top of the lineup produced for the Bulldogs, led by sophomore Justice Milz, who paced the Georgia offense with two homeruns. Senior Cortni Emanuel and Alyssa DiCarlo joined Milz with multi-hit games.

"It's awesome. She got out there and jumped on the pitch she was looking for. She did a great job with it, and to be able to get it back-to-back is pretty exciting. She's been working really hard. She's one of those kids that you can count on everyday, day-in and day-out."

Senior Brittany Gray improved to 10-0 on the year with five innings of one-hit work in the circle. The top of the innings featured Gray, who sat down 10 Razorbacks in a row. The right-handed pitcher has held Georgia opponents to one hit or less in eight of 11 appearances.

Milz handed Georgia the 1-0 edge in the first inning, powering the first of two homeruns on the game over the right field fence. Senior Alyssa DiCarlo and sophomore Alysen Febrey followed with a respective base hit up the middle and a walk, before DiCarlo advanced to third on a Ciara Bryan fly-out to right field. With senior Kendall Burton at the plate, Febrey baited Arkansas between first and second, allowing DiCarlo to steal home and deliver the 2-0 margin.

In the third frame, back-to-back homeruns from Milz and DiCarlo forced Arkansas starting pitcher Autumn Storms to hand control of the circle to sophomore Caroline Hedgcock.

Georgia erupted in the fifth inning, led off by a base-hit bunt from Emanuel. The senior stole second and advanced to third on a fly-out from DiCarlo.

To secure the run-rule and end the game after five, the Bulldogs scored the remaining four runs with two outs. After an Alysen Febrey walk, who had two on the day, sophomore Ciara Bryan and senior Kendall Burton each singled up the middle to make the score 7-0. Sophomore Mahlena O'Neal finalized the contest at eight with a double to left field, scoring Burton from first.

Up next, the Bulldogs return to Jack Turner for game two of the Arkansas series at 6 p.m. The game will be available on ESPNU. The first 500 fans receive a Christie Hamilton bobble head, and Hamilton will be in attendance to throw the first pitch. Admission is free.
