Bulldogs Open SEC Play on the Road

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a successful 6-1 home opener at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Tuesday, the Georgia Bulldog men's tennis team travels to Gainesville, Florida and Columbia, South Carolina to debut the first conference competition of the season.
On Friday, the Bulldogs face the 18th-ranked Florida Gators at 6 p.m. ET, before heading north for a Sunday matinee with the 29th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Georgia improved to 6-2 on Tuesday with its win against Mercer. The only pair of Georgia losses came at the ITA National Indoor Championships against two top-10 opponents in fifth-ranked Stanford and eighth-ranked Southern California.
GEORGIA OPENS SEC PLAY
Georgia winners of the last five SEC titles, will look to make it six in a row for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs have won five-straight twice, from 1971-75, and 2013-17. In the preseason poll, the league coaches chose Texas A&M to win the title.
SCOUTING THE GATORS
The last meeting between Florida and Georgia came in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. With the match tied at three, Jan Zielinski delivered a 6-3, 7-6 straight-set victory, sealed with a 7-4 tiebreaker for the Georgia advancement to the SEC Championship match. In doubles, Zielinski teamed with Loeb as the second-ranked team in the country to top their third top-5 team that season, the fifth-ranked duo of Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen, 6-4.
This season, the Gators have experimented with different doubles pairs, but Perez and Ingildsen check in as the top doubles team in the country. The Gators' doubles mix also features two other top-10 teams: Chase Perez-Blanco and Oliver Crawford (No. 7) and Duarte Vale and McClain Kessler (No. 9). Ingildsen and Perez headline the Florida singles lineup as well, boasting two top-10 rankings at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. The Gators' have faced six top-25 teams in their last six contests, posting wins over No. 13 Michigan and No. 22 Notre Dame. Their last action came at the ITA National Indoors, where they went 1-2.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
The last time Georgia faced South Carolina, the Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference Championship for the fifth-straight season for just the second time in school history. The only other Georgia team to do so included Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz as a player from 1971-75. SEC Freshman of the Year Nathan Ponwith overtook No. 69 Harrison O'Keefe on the first court to clinch his sixth match of the season.
The Gamecocks will face their first two ranked opponents since now-No. 8 Michigan shut them out in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Before No. 17 Georgia heads to Columbia, South Carolina plays host to Tennessee on Friday.
LAST TIME OUT
Georgia took its home opener at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex 6-1 against Mercer on Tuesday. On the sixth court, Robert Loeb clinched his first match of the season for the Bulldogs, coming back from being down early in the first set to notch a straight-set win against Ruben Vanoppen, 7-5, 6-4. Reinberg, Ponwith, Duncan and Zielinski also put their names in the singles win column. In doubles, the point came down to Alex Diaz and Nathan Ponwith on the third court, and the redshirt freshman/sophomore pair recorded its first win in dual play for the 1-0 Georgia margin.
ZIELINSKI LEADS BULLDOG DUAL PLAY
In six match wins for Georgia, the 28th-ranked Zielinski has clinched the match for the Bulldogs on three separate occasions, twice on the fourth court and once on the fifth. The Warsaw, Poland native remains undefeated in singles dual play this season, leading Georgia with seven wins in dual play. Zielinski also has a 20-6 record overall with six wins over ranked opponents. The junior has yet to complete only one match this dual season – against Laurens Verboven of Southern California – which was tied at four in the third set when the match ended.
DUNCAN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
After sweeping the singles field on the fifth court at the ITA National Indoors, 19th-ranked Walker Duncan received All-Tournament honors. The junior from Atlanta, Georgia remains undefeated in singles dual play. Alongside Jan Zielinski, who had two singles wins in the tournament, Duncan has the second-most singles wins for Georgia with 20 on the year, including a team-best seven against ranked opponents. During the ITA National Indoors, one of the ranked victories came against Stanford's No. 117 David Wilczynski, 6-3, 6-3 to knot Georgia's match at one.
GEORGIA IN SEC WEEKLY HONORS
11th-ranked senior Wayne Montgomery was named Co-SEC Player of the Week alongside Tennessee's senior Luis Valero after a 3-0 weekend in singles and doubles. The accolade marked Montgomery's fifth weekly award from the SEC in his career, including two Player of the Week honors and three SEC Freshman of the Week. He was also named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2015, the first for the Georgia men's tennis program since John Isner. Since then, sophomore Nathan Ponwith won the 2017 SEC Freshman of the Week – he was the first SEC player in history to win Freshman of the Week five times.
GEORGIA FLEXES DEPTH IN DUAL SINGLES PLAY
Seven different Bulldogs have posted wins in singles this year, with different Georgia players taking turns on the sixth court. Behind the top-ranked Wake Forest Deacons with six, Georgia is one of only two teams in the ITA/Oracle Tennis Rankings to total five ranked singles players. Texas A&M also boasts five ranked players in the singles lineup.
