Volleyball Suffers First Sweep at Hands of #14 Kentucky

October 26, 2018 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia volleyball (12-9, 3-7) suffered its first sweep of the season to 14th-ranked Kentucky (15-4, 9-0) Friday evening at Stegeman Coliseum (18-25, 14-25, 17-25).

T'ara Ceasar, Rachel Ritchie, and Majesti Bass each recorded six kills in Friday's match to lead the Bulldogs. Setter Meghan Donovan recorded her 10thdouble-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs. Bass led the Bulldogs on the net with three blocks while Kendall Glover had 13 digs.

"I think it's a combination of learning from tonight and continuing to work and build on the things we're working on," Tom Black said. "We need to keep working on our offense; I think our blocking got better. I don't know if we caught on what [Kentucky] was trying to do fast enough. [To get the right sides and middles more swings], that's huge for us and obviously that starts on the serve-receive end for us too. I think we're typically a better passing team than we showed tonight so that will allow us to get them going but that's some of the change I'm seeing."

Kentucky began the opening set 4-0 but Georgia quickly scored three-straight points to pull within one. Down by seven, Georgia used another three-point run to cut the UK lead to four, 14-10. With the Bulldogs still down four, 17-13, Kentucky used a 5-1 run to open a 21-13 lead en route to a 25-18 set one victory.

Down by two in the second stanza, Georgia used a 4-0 run to find its first lead of the match, 8-6. Not long after, Kentucky used a four-point run of its own to retake an 11-9 lead. Another Wildcat run, this time by six points, widened the Kentucky lead to 19-11. The Wildcats prevented the Bulldogs from putting together a run the remainder of the set, rolling to a 25-14 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The beginning of the third set was close, with Georgia in front by a digit, 6-5. Kentucky then strung together a 9-1 run to go ahead 14-7. Once again, the Wildcats held the Bulldogs from putting together a run and wrapped up the sweep with a 25-17 set three win.

Georgia returns to action Sunday with a matchup against Tennessee at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs and Lady Vols will begin at 2 p.m.
