Georgia Notched 1-1 Draw Against Alabama on Senior Day

October 21, 2018 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. ---
An equalizing goal from freshman Abby Boyan kept the Georgia Bulldogs alive in a 1-1 double overtime tie against the Alabama Crimson Tide Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the Turner Soccer Complex.

"I thought we defended well- we were organized there," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said.  "I thought our passion was there. We won a lot of balls and possessed it pretty well.  We just did not have the finishing touches in the final third and we were caught offsides a few times which hurt us as well.  But overall, I thought our effort was on a really high level and we played tough on the field. I am proud of the effort."

Georgia (4-8-3, 1-5-3 SEC) came out at the start with freshman Weldon Kolker attempting the net in the first two minutes of the match. The Bulldogs continued to fire shots but none met success. Both teams traded off shots but neither side was able to score due to strong defense and impressive goalkeepers, contributing the clean scoreboard after 45 minutes of play.

Coming into the half Georgia had 10 shots to Alabama's six while both teams tied for saves.

Heading back on the field the Bulldogs continued with their immediate attacks on goal. Freshman Dani Murguia launched a shot 30 seconds into the match only to be blocked by the Alabama goalkeeper.

The Crimson Tide turned the ball on the offensive kicking it high into the right corner of the Georgia net securing the first goal of the game. The Bulldogs fought back hard to regain the tally. In the 58th minute freshman Abby Boyan caught a pass off of sophomore Delaney Erwin to tie the game 1-1.

"That was the first time we scored after conceding a goal first, so that's definitely an improvement," Boyan said. "I also think we had possession most of the time and we put up a big fight today."

The intensity on both sides continued with each team continuing to fire on goal. Freshman Emory Wegener logged an impressive save off of an Alabama free kick in order to keep the game tied. Her diving saves continued with a blocked shot from outside the 18 as well as a blocked corner kick. Tied at one goal each, the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide headed into overtime.

During overtime both teams had shots on goal, none of which met net, solidifying Georgia's fifth double-overtime home game of the season. Possession traded back and forth across the pitch but the defenses did not waiver. The Bulldogs had a chance for the win with a header from freshman Dani Murguia that hit the utside of the net, but Georgia notched the tie after 110 minutes of play.

The Bulldogs will conclude regular season action on the road in Lexington against the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday, October 25.
