Georgia Ends Season with Loss at Kentucky

October 25, 2018 | Soccer

LEXINGTON, Ky. --- The University of Georgia soccer team ended the 2018 season with a 2-1 loss to Kentucky on Thursday night at the Bell Soccer Stadium.

The Bulldogs ended with a 4-9-5 overall record and a 1-6-3 mark in Southeastern Conference action, while the Wildcats finished 5-14, 1-9 SEC.

"This is a difficult result when we did a nice job of fighting back," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "I didn't think it was our best soccer today and we didn't have the cutting edge in the final third when we were in good position which came back to hurt us.  I'm still proud of this team and the growth that we are making together. I look forward to taking this forward, growing, and getting better everyday."

Sophomore Liz Brucia made her first career start in goal for the Bulldogs to finish the season. The Westfield, New Jersey native made five saves.

Although Georgia took one more shot than Kentucky in the first 45 minutes of play, the Bulldogs and Wildcats both had two shots on goal with the goalkeepers keeping the scoreboard clean in the first half.

Kentucky started the second half on the attack and were able to score one minute after returning to the field.

Georgia's Katie Ralys scored the equalizer with a finish inside the six to the far post from Dani Murguia at the 61:48 mark.

A minute later, a Kentucky red card resulted in a free kick for the Bulldogs. Murguia took the shot wide.

With the Wildcats down a player, Georgia continued on the attack taking eight shots with the one player advantage, but it was not enough for the victory as Kentucky went on the breakaway in the 78th minute and were able to score the game-winning goal to defeat Georgia in both team's final game of the season.

Georgia finished the game with 18 shots with six on target, and five saves.

With only six points in conference play, the Bulldogs will not advance to the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama. No. 7 Vanderbilt secured the SEC regular season champion title with an 8-1-1 SEC record, including tonight's loss at Ole Miss.
