Georgia Plays to 1-1 Draw in Double Overtime at Samford

BOX SCORE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- In a battle of the Bulldogs, Georgia soccer played to a 1-1 draw against Samford in double overtime on Friday night at the Samford Soccer Stadium.Â
Â
Georgia (3-3-1) was able to take an early lead when senior Mariel Gutierrez passed the ball to junior Sydney Shultis who scored from slightly outside the box. This marks the first goal from Shultis since returning from an injury that kept her sidelined throughout much of the 2016 season.Â
Â
Georgia held Samford (1-5-1) scoreless until the final five minutes of regulation when a corner kick sent into the box was deflected by Georgia defenders and then shot by Erin Bonner for the goal.Â
Â
"It was a hard-fought, scrappy game," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Both teams competed well and unfortunately we could not hold them out in the final five minutes of the game and gave up that corner kick goal. I thought they had the better of the play in the overtime periods. We saw flashes where we played well, but it wasn't consistent enough for us. This was another good, challenging game that gets us prepared for SEC play."
Â
Both Bulldog teams had seven shots on goal, but Samford outshot Georgia 20-11, eight of which game in the extra minutes of play. Â
Â
Georgia returns home for its final non-conference game of the season against Coastal Carolina (5-1) on Sunday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
Â
Fans now have the opportunity to enjoy Georgia soccer games with a UGA soccer seatback.
