Georgia Falls Short at Mizzou
September 15, 2017 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. --- Two late second- half goals lifted Missouri over the Georgia soccer team at Walton Stadium on Friday night. The Bulldogs (4-4-1, 0-1 SEC) fell to the Tigers (4-4-1, 1-0 SEC), 3-1, in their first conference game of the season.
"This is the SEC," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Mizzou is a team that plays very aggressive, high tempo. For most of the game we matched them. Both teams created a lot of chances. They were better in the final third and they finished some chances that we weren't able to put away. That's the difference in the game. We played hard and we played well between the 18s. We have some things we need to clean up both offensively and defensively. But we were in the game and had several good opportunities, including a penalty kick, that we didn't finish."
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the game with a shot that was chipped over Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell.
Georgia had the chance to even score in the 28th minute when Kelsey Killean took a shot that was blocked by the hand of a Missouri defender. Her penalty kick attempt was saved.
Mizzou held the 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard despite Georgia outshooting the Tigers 8-7 throughout the first half of the match.
Georgia kept its attack in the second half. Killean scored the equalizer in the 65th minute. She tapped it into the back of the net from the right post off an assist from freshman Katie Ralys.
The Bulldogs' best chance for the lead came in the final ten minutes of play. Alex Pallo sent the ball to Killean whose shot soared high of the net.
After the Bulldogs had back-to-back shots blocked, the Tigers were able to score with six minutes on the clock to win the match.
Missouri sealed the win with its third and final goal off a low strike from outside the box with less than two minutes left.
Georgia will continue SEC action on the road as the Bulldogs travel to Oxford, Mississippi to face the Ole Miss Rebels on Thursday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET. Georgia returns home to host Vanderbilt on Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
