Georgia Fights Hard in 1-0 Loss to Virginia Tech

BOX SCORE

BLACKSBURG, VA. ---
Georgia soccer played a hard-fought battle, but ultimately fell to Virginia Tech, 1-0, at Thompson Field on Sunday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Georgia split the weekend on the road to become 2-2 on the season.

"It was certainly a hard-fought game," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Virginia Tech is a very talented team and that's part of what we designed in our schedule, to play tough teams.  We gave a good battle today and I'm proud of the efforts. I'm proud to coach this team because they continue to fight and we showed that we are very competitive at a high level.  Unfortunately, they capitalized on an opportunity in the first half in the box and we had some opportunities we didn't capitalize on. The margin of winning and losing is razor-thin here."

Georgia put Virginia Tech on its heels early to start the game, having two quick corner kick opportunities within the first four minutes of action. The Bulldogs held a majority of the pressure through the first 15 minutes of the game, with a 4-0 advantage in shots.

Louise Hogrell saved the Hokies' first shot of the game, but Virginia Tech was able to finish off the rebound, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Georgia finished the game with two more shots and corner kicks than the Hokies, but struggled to finish its opportunities.

Alex Pallo had Georgia's best chance for the equalizer in the last minute of the game. Kelsey Killean served a beautiful ball from a corner kick and Pallo had a chance to finish with a shot that went just high and landed on top of the goal.

Georgia is back on the road next Friday, September 1 at Lipscomb. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs return home to face the Clemson Tigers on Sunday, September 3 at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
