March 18, 2017

Final Stats

BATON ROUGE, LA.---Sixth-ranked LSU beat Georgia 5-1 Saturday at Alex Box Stadium in front of a crowd of 11,327.

Georgia (8-12, 0-2 SEC) held the Tigers to just four hits but LSU took advantage of eight walks to clinch an SEC series. Freshman Tony Locey started and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts to fall to 2-3. Georgia collected nine hits but stranded seven runners and the Tigers turned three double plays.

The Tigers (15-5, 2-0 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a walk, hit by pitch, wild pitch and an RBI-groundout by Josh Smith. In the fifth, Antoine Duplantis registered his 10th and 11th RBI of the series with a two-run single for a 4-1 advantage and end Locey's outing.

LSU left-hander Jared Poche' entered the game with a 0.00 ERA, having thrown 29 scoreless innings on the year. The streak was snapped in the fourth inning when junior Keegan McGovern led off the frame with a solo home run, his second of the year. It was the only blemish for the senior who went seven innings, scattering seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve his mark to 5-0. Caleb Gilbert tossed the final two innings for his first save.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch slated for 2 pm EDT and be available on SEC Network+ and the Bulldog Sports Network from IMG.

Dawg Tracks

*Junior LF Keegan McGovern tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth with a leadoff home run, his second of the year and 11th of his career. It snapped LSU's Jared Poche's scoreless innings pitched streak at 32 this season.

*Freshman SS Cam Shepherd is 6-for-11 in the series after going 2-for-4 Saturday. Over the last nine games, he is batting .439 (18-for-41).

*Freshmen CF Tucker Maxwell led off the 8th inning with a single to extend his on base streak to 15 games.

*Sophomore DH Michael Curry extended his hitting streak to six games with a base hit in the sixth inning.

*Junior RHP Blake Cairnes registered a pair of strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning.

Coach's Corner Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin

"We had opportunities offensively and had guys in scoring position, but we rolled into three double plays. LSU's middle infielders are seniors and are very good at turning the double play when they get a chance. Tony (Locey) was cruising until the fifth and then lost his command. Overall, we had too many walks, we hit a few batters, and they scored a couple of runs without getting a hit. I thought our guys in the bullpen did a pretty good job especially Blake (Cairnes) getting a couple of strikeouts when they had the bases loaded."
