Rio Mar, Puerto Rico --- The Georgia women's golf team fired a 10-over 298 in Monday's second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The No. 5-ranked Bulldogs slipped one spot on the team leaderboard to fifth entering Tuesday's final round at the Rio Mar River Course.
Georgia is tied with N.C. State and Michigan, nine shots behind leader Furman on the team leaderboard.
"Really, we had to make some late birdies to post the number we did," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Now, we still have a chance to win the golf tournament tomorrow. If we are able to make birdies and come back and win, the way we battled today will play a big part in that."
Last year, the Bulldogs entered the final round in Puerto Rico seven shots off the lead and watched that gap balloon to 10 over the first half of the final round before rallying for a three-stroke victory.
"We met after the round and talked about last year," Brewer said. "We were down double digits with less holes to go than we have tomorrow. We know we have a sharpen a few things up, but we also know what we're capable off. Is the lead too big? We'll find out tomorrow. But we still believe we can make it very exciting tomorrow and win this golf tournament."
Jillian Hollis and Harang Lee signed for the Bulldogs' low loops on Monday, a pair of 1-over 73. Georgia also counted a 75 from Mary Ellen Shuman and a 77 from Rinko Mitsunaga. Bailey Tardy posted the Bulldogs' drop score, an 80. Sammi Lee, who is competing as an individual, also shot 80.
Overall, Harang Lee and Mitsunaga are tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard at 4-over 148. Furman's Haylee Harford leads the field at 5-under 139. Also for Georgia, Hollis is tied for 32nd at 150, Tardy is tied for 38th at 151, Shuman is tied for 45th at 153 and Sammi Lee is 67th at 157.
No. 8 Furman, at 583, is three shots ahead of No. 15 Kent State. Rounding out the top-10 teams are TCU at 590; No. 9 Arkansas at 591; the Bulldogs, Wolfpack and Wolverines all at 592; No. 21 Baylor and Texas Tech at 593 and LSU at 605.
