Straight-Set Victory Secures Season Sweep of Alabama

November 05, 2017 | Volleyball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Bulldogs defeated Alabama (16-10, 4-8) Sunday afternoon in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-15), securing the season sweep of the Crimson Tide.

The Dawgs (17-9, 7-6 SEC) took both matches from Alabama this season, each in straight sets. It's the first time since 2012 that UGA has swept the Tide in the season series.

"The ladies prepared well this week and showed a lot of composure against a good Alabama team," Tom Black said. "We're looking forward to continuing the work in our gym this week."

T'ara Ceasar finished with 17 kills in the match, her seventh-straight double-digit kill match in a row and 20th of her freshman season. Majesti Bass and Rachel Ritchie each tallied nine kills in the contest while Kendall Kazor added seven with a .700 hitting percentage.

Meghan Donovan picked up her eighth double-double of the season, dishing out 35 assists and pickup up a new career-high 19 digs.

Senior Cassidy Anderson recorded her 1,000th career dig in the final set.

The first set was closely battled throughout as the set featured 12 ties. Georgia found itself down 19-16 late in the set. A kill by Kazor knotted the match at 21 followed by an error by the Tide to put the Dawgs ahead. Another kill from Kazor, her fourth of the set succeeded by an ace from Kendall Glover gave Georgia set point. Bass and Kazor teamed up for a block to secure the opening set, 25-21. The Dawgs outscored Alabama 9-2 to wrap up the first set. Ceasar led the squad with six kills.

Georgia led much of the second set but Alabama stayed within striking distance. The Tide found a lead midway through the set at 16-13 but a 7-1 run put the Dawgs back on top, 20-17. Ceasar had three kills alone during the run. The Dawgs held on for a 25-23 win in the frame, bolstering the 2-0 lead in the match. As a team, Georgia hit .326 in the set.

The Bulldogs climbed out to an early 7-2 lead in the third set, forcing Alabama to call a quick timeout. It was all Georgia the remainder of the set, never allowing Alabama to pull within less than five and the Dawgs rolled to a 25-15 set three win to secure the sweep. UGA built on its second set hitting percentage to hit .387 in the final frame.

Up next, Georgia welcomes Ole Miss to the Ramsey Center on Friday, Nov. 10, before opening a three-match road swing. Friday's first serve is slated for 6 p.m. on the SEC Network+.
