Georgia Takes Down Ole Miss in Three Sets
November 10, 2017 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia volleyball recorded its sixth win in its last seven matches Friday evening with a straight-set victory over the Ole Miss Rebels, 26-24, 25-22, 25-20.
The Bulldogs continue to climb, now sitting at 18-9 on the season and 8-6 in Southeastern Conference play. UGA's 18 wins have topped the win total of 10 of the last 11 seasons.
"Ole miss is a strong team and its pins put a ton of pressure on us offensively," head coach Tom Black remarked. "We were a little up and down each set but did a really good job making the changes we needed to improve each point, especially in transition and behind the service line. We're excited to use this weekend to recover then get to back to work in the gym this week."
The freshmen tandem of T'ara Ceasar and Rachel Ritchie once again led the Dawgs offensively. Ceasar's 19 kills is a new UGA rally scoring record for kills in a three-set match. The new record topped her previous record set twice this season of 18. Friday's match was Ceasar's 22nd double-digit kill match. Ritchie tallied 11 kills, the 20th double-digit kill match this season. Both hit a very respectable .375.
Redshirt-freshman Kianna Young put up seven kills while recording a .385 hitting clip. Majesti Bass also contributed seven kills.
The opening stanza featured 10 ties and a pair of lead changes. The Bulldogs held a lead on the Rebels much of the set but only by a point or two. Tied at 11, UGA put up three-straight points to pull ahead. The Rebels wouldn't go quietly however as they worked to knot the set at 23. A kill by Ceasar secured the 26-24 set one victory. Eight of Ceasar's kills came in the opening frame along.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead on Georgia in the second, leading by as much as four. A 5-1 run allowed Georgia to catch and overtake Ole Miss at 17-15. Georgia never trailed again in the set, rolling to a 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. UGA's best set offensively was the second, hitting .344 as a team.
The third was very similar to the second with the Rebels taking an early lead on Georgia, this time leading early at 10-4. The 7-1 run that ensued by Georgia tied it up at 11. Six ties later, the Dawgs were able to pull ahead, 21-18. UGA took four of the next five points to secure the sweep of Ole Miss. Ceasar had seven kills, no errors, and hit .500 in the final frame.
Georgia will open a three-match road swing beginning next Friday, Nov. 17, at No. 7 Kentucky. The Dawgs will then head to Tennessee that Sunday.
