Georgia Notches 20th Win with Sweep of LSU

November 22, 2017 | Volleyball

BATON ROUGE, La. – In its final road match of regular season, the University of Georgia volleyball team defeated LSU (19-8, 10-7) in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-21).

The victory is Georgia's 20th win of the season and 10th in Southeastern Conference play. It was also the 15th sweep of an opponent.

"Tonight the ladies showed a ton of composure and toughness against a high-level LSU team," mentioned Tom Black. "We're very proud of the composure they showed as well as the ability to get better throughout the match. We'll enjoy this tonight and understand the work continues tomorrow."

Georgia used a balanced offense with T'ara Ceasar recording 15 kills and Majesti Bass tallying 10. Rachel Ritchie contributed nine of her own. Meghan Donovan picked up her third double-double in as many matches with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Just as good as the offense was, Georgia also used a solid defense as Kendall Glover (14) and Amanda Dachs (11) joined Donovan with double-digit digs. As a team, Georgia out-blocked LSU, one of the top blocking teams in the SEC, 6-5. Bass assisted on a team-high four blocks.

The Bulldogs and Tigers exchanged points early in the opening set before LSU opened a three-point lead at 9-6. LSU continued its firm hold on the lead, leading by as much as four at 20-16. Georgia took nine of the next 10 points to end the set, 25-21, and take a 1-0 lead in the match. LSU committed six attack errors during Georgia's 9-1 run.

It looked as though the Bulldogs would run away with the second set as Georgia used an early 10-2 run to go up 12-5 on the Tigers. LSU slowed the Bulldogs' early lead to eventually tie it at 17; however, Georgia never fell behind, holding on and taking the final four points to secure the 2-0 lead in the match.

LSU came out of the gate hot, taking an early four-point lead in the third. The Bulldogs began firing the offense to quickly knot the set up at 10. After exchanging points in the next few rallies, Georgia used a three-point run to go ahead 17-15. The Bulldogs never looked back as they sealed the sweep with a 25-21 set three win.

The Bulldogs will return home to host No. 6 Kentucky Friday. Senior night will begin at 4:45 p.m. with first serve set for 5 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
