Georgia Falls In SEC Opener At UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. --- Georgia had a challenging task in its SEC opener in the Kentucky Wildcats, as the Bulldogs (12-2, 0-1) fell to Kentucky 3-0 on Wednesday night.
"We started the match organized and aggressive, but did not respond well when Kentucky pushed back," said head coach Lizzy Stemke. "We were flat offensively and there was certainly frustration there that seeped into our game as a whole. We have more to give, and we expect to rebound quickly."
Kentucky (8-3, 1-0) took the sets 25-19, 25-16 and 25-14 on its way to the win. The Kentucky offense was a tough stop with the tandem of Leah Edmond and Kaz Brown, finishing with 16 and 13 kills, respectively, as the team hit at a .268 clip.
Kendall Kazor led the Bulldogs on the right side with six kills while Caroline Ostman followed with five. Elle McCord put up a team-best nine digs from the backcourt. Georgia put up six total team blocks, as Desiree McCray notched four, including a solo stop, followed by Kazor's three.
Georgia took an early lead in the first set over Kentucky thanks in part to four kills from Ostman. After a called Kentucky timeout with Georgia up 17-13, the Wildcats finished out the set on a 12-2 kill for the win.
A kill from Meghan Donovan had Georgia tying it up at 8 each in the second set, but another surge from Kentucky put the Wildcats up 2-0 at the break. In the final frame, Kentucky led as much as eight points before two blocks from McCray put Georgia back in the set. However, the Wildcats' .333 hitting mark allowed Kentucky to pull away for the match win.
SEC play continues on the road this week, as Georgia heads to Knoxville for a 1:30 p.m. ET match against Tennessee on Sunday.
