KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- J.J. Frazier and Yante Maten each scored 18 points as the Georgia men's basketball team defeated George Washington, 81-73, in the semifinals of the 2016 CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
The Bulldogs (3-1) were led in scoring by Maten and Frazier, but received major contributions from several other players. The Bulldog finishing with the most rebounds was Juwan Parker, who recorded a career-high 11 boards, and was just one point shy of a double-double. Derek Ogbeide matched his career-high with 11 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. The Colonials (3-1), winners of the 2016 National Invitation Tournament, were handed their first loss of the season.
"I thought our kids did a lot of really good things in the game," said head coach Mark Fox. "We had to play pretty complete basketball. We were pretty efficient offensively, and we weren't great defensively, but we did enough on the glass to win the game."
With 35.5 seconds to go, Pape Diatta made a layup and got fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound. Diatta put the Bulldogs up six when he made the ensuing free throw and was one of a number of players who made an impact off the bench for Georgia. Mike Edwards scored eight points, matching his season high, while Jordan Harris made both of his shots and scored five points in 17 minutes played.
Despite trailing 36-35 at the break, the Bulldogs were behind for less than two and a half minutes total in the first half. Maten scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed five rebounds in the opening period. Frazier scored all nine of his first-half points in the game's first six minutes, while also tallying three rebounds and an assist by halftime.
Georgia will be back in action Tuesday night against the winner of the other semifinal game from Monday night, which puts Kansas up against UAB. The CBE Classic championship game will be played Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2.
