Hollis' 68 Leads Georgia To 1-Under 287

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Georgia women's golf team fired a 1-under 287 in Monday's second round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club, pushing the Bulldogs to third on the team leaderboard at 1-over 577.

Freshman Jillian Hollis paced the Bulldogs with a 4-under 68, while Georgia also counted a trio of 1-over 73s from Manuela Carbajo Ré, Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy. The Bulldogs dropped Harang Lee's 76.

"It was another very solid round, both individually and as a team," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The way we're playing, in a way, takes pressure off everyone when they're 1-under or even-par. They can just continue to play normal golf because they know they probably have teammates around that mark to back them up. We've had three different players shoot 68s in four rounds of golf this season. On a good day, that could all happen at once."

Hollis' 68 followed Tardy's same mark in the opening round of last week's Cardinal Kickoff and Lee's in that event's second round.

Hollis endured a roller-coaster front nine. She birdied No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 before successive bogeys at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8. A birdie at No. 9 pushed her to 1-under at the turn and she birdied No. 10, No. 12 and No. 15 before wrapping up with a trio of pars.

Arkansas leads the team field at 565. Rounding out the top-10 are Virginia at 575, the Bulldogs and Florida both at 577, Clemson at 587, Furman and Wake Forest both at 589, UCF and Auburn both at 590 and N.C. State at 591.

Clemson's Alice Hawson shot 7-under 56 on Monday to move into a tie atop the individual standings with Florida's Taylor Tomlinson. For Georgia, Hollis is fifth at 3-under 141, Tardy is tied for 12th at 144, Carbajo Ré and Mitsunaga are both tied for 18th at 146 and Lee is tied for 45th at 150.

Georgia posted a par-or-better team score for the second time in four rounds this season. That matches the total of par-or-better rounds the Bulldogs have posted in the last three seasons combined.

"Right now, it feels odd not to be in the red as a team," Brewer said. "I've said it numerous times, I want to compete for SEC Championships and NCAA Championships. It takes five golfers to do that. This week, we're chasing Arkansas. They have four golfers in the top 10, and we have four golfers in the top 18. Our golfer who isn't in the top 18 came within a stroke of winning last week when she shot 5-under. I like the direction we're headed."

The Bulldogs will be paired with Arkansas, Virginia and Florida in Tuesday's final round, teeing off from holes Nos. 1-3 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
