TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Georgia volleyball team (5-15, 0-8) took a 3-0 setback at Alabama (10-12, 4-4) in Tuscaloosa on Sunday afternoon.
"We played a really nice serve and defensive game today," said head coach Lizzy Stemke. "I was really proud of our efforts and organization on that front. We struggled on the offensive side of the ball along with a couple of passing ruts. We need to find a way to get more kids positively involved. We are looking forward to getting back to the gym this week with an opponent that we have already seen once before. We will take that information from the first round and work to get better in the second meeting against Ole Miss."
The Bulldogs dropped the match by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-15, as the Crimson Tide were led by Krystal Rivers' 10 kills, as Bama hit .274 with 40 kills for the match.
Redshirt junior Desiree McCray led the Bulldogs with eight kills and three blocks while fellow classmate Megan Spencer added six kills. Junior Elle McCord tallied 10 digs while three Bulldogs had two blocks each at the net with Jasmine Eatmon, Maddie Lobenstein and Kendall Kazor having a hand in those plays.
It was close early in the first set, as the teams were tied at 9 each after a McCray kill. Alabama opened it up with a 10-2 scoring spree to lead it 19-11. A Devan Porter block stopped the rally, but the Tide hit .214 in the set to go on and win it 25-18.
In the second set, Alabama came out aggressive and notched a large lead at 11-2 after six-consecutive points. A Megan Spencer kill ended the spree before the Bulldogs closed in at 15-9 under the serve of Kazor. A kill by Eatmon and service ace from Cassidy Anderson had Georgia within five, but the Tide closed it out 25-17.
Alabama came out hot from the locker rooms, getting out to a quick 8-2 lead. Georgia worked its way back to a 13-10 deficit after a block from Eatmon and Kazor, an ace from Eatmon, and kill by McCray. However, a 9-1 run by the Tide had the home team open up the lead on the way to a 25-15 win.
The Bulldogs return home for the next few matches. Georgia hosts Ole Miss on Wednesday, Oct. 28 for a 9 p.m. ET first serve on ESPNU. Nationally-ranked Florida then comes to Athens on Sunday, Nov. 1 with a 1:30 p.m. ET match on SEC Network+/WatchESPN.
