BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Paced by a second-straight 1-over 73 by Amira Alexander, the Georgia women's golf team carded a 15-over 303 in Saturday's second round of the SEC Women's Golf Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club. Both Alexander and the Bulldogs enter Sunday's final round in eighth place on the individual and team leaderboards, respectively.
Georgia is at 605, while Alexander is at 2-over 146.
"This field is tougher than an NCAA Regional," head coach Josh Brewer said. "That's kind of how we're looking at it tomorrow. Yes, of course, we want to win. That's always the goal. But now you want to try to finish top eight or top seven and, in a way, win the round tomorrow. That's how we're approaching this. We'd like to finish somewhere in the top five. If we play well, maybe we could get lucky and finish even a little higher that that."
Georgia's other counting scores on Saturday were a 76 from Harang Lee and a pair of 77s, the score posted by Manuela Carbajo Ré, Sammi Lee and Rocio Sanchez Lobato.
Overall, Carbajo Ré is tied for 24th at 151, Sammi Lee is tied for 39th at 154, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 46th at 155 and Harang Lee is tied for 55th at 157.
Alexander led the tournament briefly on Saturday. Back-to-back birdies at No. 9 and No. 10 pushed her to 3-under on the day and 2-under for the tournament; however, she bogeyed her next three holes.
"Amira played great for us," Brewer said. "She had it 3-under at one time. She kept us going by making birdies. We'll continue to ride her one more day and hopefully, someone will come on the train along with her tomorrow."
"I felt like I played about the same as I did yesterday," Alexander said. "I tried to stay relaxed and calm. I'm pleased with how I played. It builds confidence. I know the team played better today. That's also a confidence builder. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
No. 13 Vanderbilt posted a 1-under 287 to move into the team lead. The Commodores' Simin Feng and Jenny Hahn climbed into a tie with first-round leader Janie Jackson of Alabama atop the individual leaderboard at 1-under 143.
No. 4 Arkansas is second in the team field at 591. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 16 LSU at 592, No. 22 Auburn at 594, No. 7 Alabama at 595, No. 6 South Caroilna at 600, No. 19 Florida at 603, the Bulldogs at 605, Missouri at 606 and Tennessee and Texas A&M both at 607.
Shortly after the Bulldogs finished play, Brewer informed the team that instead of their traditional post-round practice they would be racing downtown to watch the Georgia Gym Dogs compete in the "Super Six" of the NCAA Championships.
"You want a chance to practice and work on your game, but we're worked hard all year," Brewer said. "They've earned this. We have a chance to go see Coach (Danna) Durante possibly win her first national title at Georgia and the 11th overall in the program's history. I think you've got to go support your fellow Bulldogs and cheer on the Gym Dogs."
Georgia will be paired with Florida and Missouri for Sunday's final round, teeing off beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET from No. 1. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
