Georgia Opens Stanford Intercollegiate With 295
October 17, 2014 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, California --- The Georgia women's golf team shot 11-over 295 in Friday's opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, placing the Bulldogs 13th on the team leaderboard.
Amira Alexander and Manuela Carbajo Ré paced the Bulldogs with a pair of 1-over 72s, while Harang Lee added a 73 and Sammi Lee posted a 78 to round out Georgia's counting tallies. Mary Ellen Shuman signed for an 82.
"Our top three all had a chance to shoot under par," head coach Josh Brewer said. "They made enough birdies; they just had one or two spots where they struggled and kept them away from that. We have to get better production out of the fourth and fifth spots. You have to expect them to be a little nervous because it has been a while since they've played in a tournament. They should have gotten that out of their systems today and now they can rebound and give us a couple of good rounds. They certainly have the ability to do that."
The Bulldogs struggled on the front side, turning at 7-over. Georgia played the first seven holes of the back side at even before dropping a combined four strokes at No. 17 and No. 18.
UCLA grabbed the team lead with a 5-under 279, largely due to a 5-under 65 from Bronte Law that put her atop the individual leaderboard. The Bruins are three strokes ahead of No. 3 Stanford and No. 5 Northwestern. Law owns a two-shot edge over Alina Ching of Pepperdine and Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford in the individual race.
For Georgia, Alexander and Carbajo Ré are tied for 28th, Harang Lee is tied for 45th, Sammi Lee is tied for 77th and Shuman is 87th.
Play continues through Sunday, with scores updated live on a three-hole basis at www.birdiefire.com.
