NESHANIC STATION, N.J. --- Georgia rising senior Emilie Burger topped Nebraska's Katelyn Wright, 5 & 3, in the opening round of match play at the 36th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships on Friday.
When the match ended following 15 holes, Burger was 4-under on the day with five birdies and a single bogey.
Burger birdied the opening hole to build a 1-up edge; however, a Wright birdie at No. 3 knotted the match. Burger then birdied No. 4 to regain a 1-up lead until Wright birdied No. 7 to bring the match back to all square.
Burger posted pars at No. 8 and No. 9 while Wright notched bogeys at both to provide a 2-up lead at the turn. Burger birdies at No. 11 and No. 13 pushed her lead to a 4-up advantage with five holes remaining.
The match ended when Burger birdied No. 15 to move to an insurmountable 5-up with three holes remaining.
Burger will now face Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Ga., in Thursday's second round at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course, teeing off at 9:50 a.m.
