GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Freshman Sepp Straka of the Georgia men's golf team has the individual lead after the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate.
On Friday, Straka signed for a 6-under-par 66 to grab a 2-shot advantage over Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg and Michigan's Matt Thompson. Straka eagled two of the par-5s on the Furman University Golf Course and added three birdies with just one bogey. For Straka, the 6-under total is a career-best loop and it is only three off the school record of 9-under set by Peter Persons in 1984.
"Sepp was just on fire today," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "He really handled the course well. He's a young guy with all the potential in the world, and a day like this proves that. We're really proud of the way he played today."
Straka is playing as an individual this weekend, meaning his results cannot be applied to the team score. On Friday, the 21st-ranked Bulldogs fired a 10-over 298 and they are in 17th place, 12 shots behind Troy.
Nicholas Reach carded a 1-under 71 for the best tally in Georgia's lineup and he stands 11th individually, five behind Straka. Keith Mitchell and T.J. Mitchell each posted a 3-over 75, followed by Brian Carter at 5-over 77. Joey Garber had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 6-over 78.
The Furman Intercollegiate will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.
