GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The 21st-ranked Georgia men's golf team had a 17-shot turnaround on Saturday in the second round of the Furman Intercollegiate.
The Bulldogs carded a 7-under 281 at Furman University Golf Course, one day after posting a 10-over 298. The Bulldogs jumped from 17th to fifth at 2-over 578, 12 shots behind team leader Clemson.
"I'm proud of the way our guys bounced back," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "When you're 11th after the first round, it would be easy to fold your tents and pack it in. But that's not how our guys are wired. They've got a lot of pride, and they came back today with focus and determination."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs got 3-under 69s from T.J. Mitchell and Keith Mitchell, while Nicholas Reach added a 2-under 70 and Joey Garber signed for an even-par 72. Brian Carter had the Bulldogs' non-counting loop of 1-over 73. On average, the Bulldogs improved almost five strokes per man from the first round to the second. Reach is seventh in the individual race at 3-under 141, six strokes behind Michigan's Matt Thompson. The Mitchells are at even-par 144, with Carter at 6-over 150 and Garber at 8-over 152.
Playing as an individual, first-round leader Sepp Straka fired a 5-over 77 on Saturday to go to 1-over 143 and into 13th.
The Furman Intercollegiate will conclude on Sunday.
