
Bulldogs Split Day Two Of Cathedral City Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.--Behind the team's 13 hits, including five home runs, the University of Georgia softball team split a pair of games on Friday, as the No. 13 Bulldogs lost to No. 5/6 Washington 7-5 and defeated No. 5/7 UCLA 13-4 in five innings.
Game One-Washington 7, Georgia 5
Despite three home runs by three different Bulldogs, Georgia fell 7-5 to the No. 5/6 Washington Huskies.
Erin Arevalo, who came on in relief of Morgan Montemayor, suffered the loss to fall to 4-1 on the season. Arevalo worked 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits. Arevalo also struck out seven. Montemayor got the start, allowing three runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. Washington's Kasey Stanchek improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. Stanchek allowed five runs on three hits in a complete game performance.
Tess Sito, Brittney Hubbard and Kristyn Sandberg provided the offense for Georgia, hitting the Bulldogs' eighth, ninth and 10th home run of the tournament. Sandberg led the Bulldogs at the plate going 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Ashley Pauly finished with two runs, while Sito and Hubbard collected one RBI a piece.
Washington used a pair of doubles, a sacrifice fly and a single to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The lead didn't last long, as Sito got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run to left center to make it a 2-1 game. Pauly capitalized on a pair of Washington miscues, a hit batter and a wild pitch, to make it all the way to third base. With one away, Pauly crossed the plate when Sandberg grounded out to the second baseman to tie the game at two.
Georgia home run hitting tear continued as Hubbard took a 1-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall to put the Bulldogs on top 3-2.
Washington answered in the top of third, as Nikia Williams homered to left center to make a 3-3 ball game.
Georgia reclaimed the lead with two outs in the bottom of third inning. With a runner at first after Pauly reached on a one-out walk, Sandberg delivered Georgia's third home run of the day that allowed Georgia a 5-3 lead.
Washington tacked one run on in the top of the fifth after Kimberlee Souza singled to left field and was driven home on a RBI-single to center off the bat of Kylee Lahners.
The Huskies added more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-5 lead. Victoria Hayward and Williams got things started with a bunt single and a walk. With no outs and runners at first and second, Kaitlin Inglesby doubled to left center to score both Hayward and Williams.
Game Two- Georgia 13, UCLA 4 (5 Inn.)
Georgia's offense came alive as it cruised to a 13-4, five-inning win over the No. 5/7 and previously unbeaten UCLA Bruins in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader. Georgia tallied 10 hits as it scored in all but one inning.
Sito moved to 3-0 on the season, allowing four runs on 10 hits. UCLA's Jessica Hall suffered the loss to fall to 4-1 on the year. Hall allowed 10 runs, five earned, on 10 hits and two walks in three innings of work. Ally Carda also saw time in the circle for the Bruins, giving up three runs on two hits.
Sito, Sandberg and Paige Wilson each collected two hits in the win. Wilson and Sandberg added home runs, bringing Georgia's tournament total to 13. Wilson finished with four RBI and scored once, while Sito drove in three.
Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases on an error, a fielder's choice and a single. With two outs, Georgia took advantage of a passed ball that allowed Pauly to cross the plate and put Georgia on top 1-0. With runners at second and third, Wilson delivered a two-out single to left that scored both Pauly and Sandberg to extend the Georgia lead to 3-0.
Anna Swafford drew a walk to open the second inning and moved to third on a stolen base and a bunt single by Niaja Griffin. Sito drove Swafford home with a sacrifice fly to left field. With one away, Griffin made it a 5-0 game when she scored on an illegal pitch. With Sandberg on second and Pauly on third, Hubbard drove a 3-2 pitch into left field that allowed both runners to score and gave Georgia a 7-0 lead.
The Bruins got one back in the bottom of the second with the help of a leadoff triple by Stephany LaRosa, who scored on a sacrifice fly. Sito worked around another triple and got Marti Reed to ground out to the circle to end the inning.
The Bulldogs made it a 10-1 game in the top of the third inning. With runners at first and second, Sito roped a two-run single to right field to score Griffin and Swafford and put Georgia ahead 9-1. Sito scored Georgia's final run of the inning on an illegal pitch.
UCLA picked up two runs in the bottom of the third on a pair of RBI singles by B.B. Bates and LaRosa. Kellie Fox got things started with a single to right field and rounded the bases on Bates' single up the middle. Andrea Harrison, who reached on a walk, scored one play later when LaRosa took the 0-1 pitch to left field for a base hit. With the bases loaded and one away, the Bulldogs flashed the leather, ending the inning on a double play that saw Bates thrown out at home and Dani Yudin out at first.
Georgia showed of its power in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on a pair of homers by Sandberg and Wilson. Sandberg led off the frame with a solo shot to straightaway center that made it an 11-3 game. After a Hubbard walk, Wilson lifted the first pitch she saw to deep left center that brought the score to 13-3.
UCLA plated one run in the bottom of the fifth inning after LaRosa scored Bates on a triple to right field. Sito and the Bulldogs recorded the final outs to seal the 13-4 win.
Georgia returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it takes on No. 6 Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. ET.
