CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—Home runs came in bulk for the University of Georgia softball team (10-1), as the No. 13 Bulldogs powered their way to a 3-0 win over No. 15 Arizona (9-4) and a 12-5 victory against Cal State Fullerton (5-7) in the Cathedral City Classic on Thursday.
Including a school-record six bombs in game two against the Titans, Georgia collected eight home runs in the two games. Senior Ashley Razey and junior Tess Sito led the way with two each and ended the night with four and five RBI, respectively.
Game One-Georgia 3, Arizona 0
Georgia opened the three-day tournament against its first ranked opponent of the season, as the fight between Cats and Dogs went to the latter with a 3-0 win.
Sophomore Morgan Montemayor (3-1) earned the win after giving up two hits and striking out four. Arizona's Shelby Babcock (4-4) took the loss after allowing six hits while striking out eight batters.
Freshman Gracie Goulder started the night's slugfest after earning her first home run as a Bulldog in the second inning to put Georgia ahead 1-0. Senior Ashley Pauly ignited the bats again in the fifth, as her double allowed Razey to blast one over the left field fence to put the score at 3-0.
Game Two-Georgia 12, Cal State Fullerton 5
The Georgia offense stayed alive in game two to start the weekend at 2-0 after defeating Cal State Fullerton 12-5.
Senior Erin Arevalo (5-0) pitched a complete game, as she gave up nine hits while retiring six players. The Titans' Aly Fascetti (3-5) took the loss after letting eight runs across on nine hits.
Georgia opened the game with a Kristyn Sandberg home run that brought in Pauly and Sito. One inning later, freshman Paige Wilson belted her first career home run before Sito put up a bomb four at-bats later to make the score 8-0.
After the Titans rallied a four-run fifth inning, the Bulldogs added a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Razey to bring home Sito, the only score of the night that wasn't a home run. Cal State Fullerton answered back with a run in the bottom of that inning before freshman Anna Swafford took a solo shot to left field to make the score 10-5. Sito then ended the night how it started with a two-run home run to right field.
The Bulldogs return to action in day two of the tournament on Friday, as they take on Washington and UCLA at 4 p.m. ET and 8:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
