Up next, Georgia continues its 10-game home stand with a two-game series against the University of Tennessee at Martin (20-12) this weekend. The Bulldogs and Skyhawks will play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Game One: Georgia 11, UNC Wilmington 0 (5 Innings)
In game on Thursday, Georgia produced its 11 runs on nine hits while sophomore Alison Owen and junior Erin Arevalo combined to toss a one-hit shutout. Owen (10-1) worked the first four innings striking out 10 and walking none allowing the only hit in the third en route to earning the win while Arevalo pitched a one-two-three fifth.
The Bulldogs scored their first 10 runs off of UNC Wilmington starter Amanda Aditays, who fell to 3-8 with the loss after pitching into the third.
Georgia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. After seniors Taylor Schlopy and Megan Wiggins drew a pair of walks on eight-straight pitches and a wild pitch advance the runners up, senior Alisa Goler provided a two-run single to center. Senior Brianna Hesson followed with a two-run home run to straight away center. It was the 10th home run of the year for Hesson, the current USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week.
In the second, Georgia extended its lead to 6-0. Senior Laura Trout was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a single from junior Ashley Pauly. Pauly would also steal second and a wild pitch subsequently allowed Trout to score and Pauly to move up to third setting up a sacrifice fly from Wiggins.
In the third, UGA continued to pile on the runs with four more to make it 10-0. After junior Brittney Hubbard started the inning with a single through the left side and stole second, freshman Shelby Altman delivered a RBI single up the middle. It marked just the third plate appearance and was the first hit and first RBI of Altman's career. The Bulldogs then proceeded to load the bases with freshman Julia Echols singling to shallow center and Schlopy drawing a walk. Two illegal pitches then allowed Altman and Echols to score runs, and Goler later capped the scoring in the frame by adding a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center.
Georgia picked up game one's final run in the fourth when Altman reached on an infield single to third, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single up the middle from Echols.
Game Two: Georgia 7, UNC Wilmington 0
In the second game of the double header, freshman Morgan Montemayor and senior Katie Murphy also combined on a one-hitter that covered a full seven innings. Montemayor (15-2) notched the win after working the first four innings giving up the only Seahawks' hit in the third while striking out four. Murphy then worked the final three innings striking out another four.
Georgia also jumped out to an early lead in game two by getting five runs in the first. After Wiggins reached on an error and stole second, Goler singled Wiggins over to third and a second error allowed her to cross the plate. A third Seahawk error and walk loaded the bases for senior Jennie Auger, who supplied the Bulldogs with her first career grand slam. It was the second home run of the season for Auger and the fifth grand slam for the Bulldogs this season.
The Bulldogs added their sixth run in the third inning as Echols reached on a two-out walk, took second on a passed ball and came around to score on a single to center from Altman.
In the sixth, UGA scratched across final run of the day to make it 7-0. Goler drew a one-out walk and scored from first on a double to right center from Hesson.
UNC Wilmington's Samme Lisowsky worked a complete allowing just one unearned run but suffered the loss to fall to 2-10.
